A sense of urgency: Trait impulsivity in co-occurring bipolar and alcohol use disorder.

Alcohol Clin Exp Res (Hoboken)

Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Addiction Sciences Division, Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston, South Carolina, USA.

Published: October 2024

Background: Bipolar disorder (BD) and alcohol use disorder (AUD) often co-occur, with BD + AUD characterized by higher levels of impulsivity relative to either disorder alone. Emotional facets of impulsivity (e.g., "urgency," measured by the UPPS-P), however, remain underexplored in this population and could have distinct associations with clinical correlates.

Methods: This cross-sectional study used a two-by-two (BDxAD) factorial design, including groups with BD + AD (n = 28), BD (n = 29), AD (n = 28), and healthy controls (HC) (n = 27), to identify between-group differences among the five subscales of the UPPS-P. Associations of UPPS-P subscales with Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS) total scores and clinical variables of interest were also examined.

Results: BD + AD had the highest scores for every UPPS-P subscale but Sensation Seeking, with the Positive and Negative Urgency subscales having the largest main effects for both BD and AD. BIS-11 total scores were most correlated with the urgency subscales of the UPPS-P. Negative Urgency was found to be uniquely relevant to clinical measures in the BD + AD group. Rapid cycling was associated with both urgency subscales and BIS-11 scores, and the Alcohol Dependence Scale was most correlated with the Premeditation subscale.

Limitations: Cross sectional design and predominantly white sample.

Conclusions: Unlike the BIS-11, UPPS-P is able to distinguish emotional from nonemotional facets of impulsivity, something especially relevant to people with co-occurring BD + AD, where fluid emotionality is a key part of symptom presentation. For this reason, the UPPS-P should be utilized in future studies and clinical settings measuring trait impulsivity in this population.

Impulse control and its association with ejaculation time in men with premature ejaculation.

J Sex Med

December 2024

Observation Department of Council of Forensic Medicine, 34196, İstanbul, Türkiye.

Background: The relationship between impulse control and premature ejaculation (PE), the most common sexual dysfunction in men, is not yet well understood.

Aim: To assess the association between impulse control issues and the severity of PE in men with a lifelong diagnosis of this condition.

Methods: A cross-sectional observational study was designed to evaluate patients who presented to the clinic with complaints of PE between March 2023 and March 2024.

Aim: To explore white matter (WM) tracts linked to impulsivity using the diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (DMRI) connectometry method.

Methods: We analyzed 218 healthy participants from the Leipzig Study for Mind-Body-Emotion Interactions database. Impulsivity correlations with DMRI-derived WM changes were assessed using Urgency-Premeditation-Perseverance-Sensation (UPPS) Impulsive Behavior Scale subscales: lack of perseverance (PE), lack of premeditation (PM), sensation seeking (SS), and negative urgency.

The bowel function instrument for rectal cancer survivors with anastomosis and ostomy.

J Psychosom Res

December 2024

Division of Public Health Sciences and SWOG Statistics and Data Management Center, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center, University of Pennsylvania, United States of America.

Objective: Rectal cancer is often treated with surgery such as ostomy or anastomosis. The Bowel Function Instrument (BFI) is a valid and reliable 18-item measure of physical bowel symptoms. Some items on the BFI do not apply to those with ostomies.

It is well known that depression, anxiety, and impulsiveness are interrelated; however, studies that have assessed their association with the coronavirus outbreak are scarce. Hence, our study aimed to evaluate the impulsivity incidence and its correlation with anxiety and depression following COVID-19 infection between November 2022 and June 2023. The 201 participants completed the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS), Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAM-A), Sheehan Disability Scale (SDS), and short UPPS-P scales (urgency, premeditation, perseverance, sensation seeking, and positive urgency) to allow us to determine their anxiety and depression symptoms, functional impairment, and impulsivity, respectively.
