Mydriasis associated with ischemic cerebrovascular infarct affecting the ipsilateral cerebellar interposital nucleus in 2 dogs.

Published: September 2024

A 10-year-old male neutered crossbreed dog and an 8-year-old female neutered greyhound presented after peracute onset of cerebellar dysfunction. The crossbreed dog had anisocoria with the left pupil being mydriatic, spontaneous conjugate rotatory nystagmus with fast phase to the left and delayed postural reactions on the left side. The greyhound had anisocoria with the left pupil being mydriatic, right positional ventral strabismus, absent menace response in the left eye and postural reaction deficits on the left side. For both dogs, the neuroanatomical localization was left cerebellum with paradoxical vestibular syndrome. Magnetic resonance imaging identified a left cerebellar ischemic territorial infarct of the rostral cerebellar artery, involving the region of the left interposital nucleus. Both dogs were given supportive care and at 2-week follow-up the anisocoria had resolved. Anisocoria with mydriasis can be a clinical sign in dogs with naturally-occurring cerebellar ischemic infarcts in the region of the ipsilateral interposital nucleus.

Using the intracellular microelectrode technique the reactions were investigated in corticospinal neurons (CSN) after stimulation of contralateral (cIP) and ipsilateral interpositus nucleus of cerebellum as well as ventrolateral nucleus of thalamus. Experiments were made on adult intact cats and the same preliminary lesion of cIP nucleus (exposition from 1 to 6 months). Acceleration of the monosynaptic thalamo-cortical EPSPs time to peak in slow CSN was revealed in operated animals.

In adult semi-chronically implanted sedated cats discharges of single rubrospinal (RS) neurons were tested for selective activation of movement-evoking foci within pericruciate cortex (CX; area 4) and anterior division of cerebellar interpositus nucleus (IN). It was found that a very high incidence of neuronal responses was obtained only when stimulating IN and CX foci which controlled the same joint with respect to that moved from activation of the rubral foci including the recorded neurons. In these cases very frequent convergence phenomena were observed by activating IN and/or CX foci.

The facilitatory effects evoked on the motor periphery by the activation of neuronal pools in cerebellar nuclei were analized in 13 cats. The aim of the work was to compare the frequency and the characteristics of the motor facilitations induced on the ipsilateral forelimb by the microstimulation of cerebellar foci in the fastigial (CBM or in the interposital (NIA) nucleus. CBM or NIA sites, previously identified for the motor effects, were microstimulated, together with the contralateral motor cortex, to give evidence of the facilitations.

Peculiarities of synaptic processes in red nucleus neurons evoked by stimulation of various parts of substantia nigra and cerebellar interposital nucleus were studied in acute experiments in cats using an intracellular recording technique. Such stimulation is stated to induce mono- and polysynaptic activation of the rubrospinal neurons. Great similarity is found in developing monosynaptic cerebellar and nigral excitatory effects.
