Most of spectroscopic signals are specified by the nonlinear laser-induced polarization. In recent years, population-detection of signals becomes a trend in femtosecond spectroscopy. Polarization-detected (PD) and population-detected signals are fundamentally different, because they are determined by photoinduced processes acting on disparate time scales. In this work, we consider the fluorescence-detected (FD) -wave-mixing (WM) signal as a representative example of population-detected signals, derive a rigorous expression for this signal, and discuss its approximate variants suitable for numerical simulations. This leads us to the definition of the phenomenological FD (PFD) signal, which contains as a special case all definitions of FD signals available in the literature. Then we formulate and prove the population-polarization equivalence (PPE) theorem, which states that PFD WM signals produced by (possibly strong) laser pulses can be evaluated as conventional PD signals in which the effective polarization is determined by the PFD transition dipole moment operator. We use the PPE theorem for the construction of the protocol for the simulation of PFD 4WM signals. As an example, we calculate electronic two-dimensional (2D) PFD spectra of the gas-phase pyrazine and compare them with the corresponding PD 2D spectra.

Article Synopsis
  • - This text discusses methods to suppress unwanted background signals in coherent multidimensional spectroscopy, highlighting the use of phase-cycling techniques borrowed from NMR spectroscopy.
  • - It presents an overview of cogwheel phase cycling, which varies all pulse phases simultaneously in defined increments, and how it can improve the extraction of complex nonlinear signals compared to traditional nested phase cycling.
  • - The authors derive selection rules for detecting fourth-order signals and suggest numerical methods to optimize phase-cycling schemes, showing through experiments that cogwheel phase cycling often captures nonlinear signals more efficiently than nested methods.

Article Synopsis
  • Carcinocythemia is the presence of tumor cells in the blood, making it challenging to detect, especially when the cells are present in low numbers.
  • In a case study, a 56-year-old patient was initially suspected of having sepsis but was later diagnosed with carcinocythemia after atypical cells were found in a blood smear, and further tests confirmed the presence of carcinoma cells.
  • The patient sadly passed away shortly after diagnosis, revealing that the underlying cause was a form of breast cancer; this highlights the need for improved detection methods for carcinocythemia in patients with symptoms like disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC).

HER2 signaling upregulation is a hallmark of breast cancer which is the second cause of cancer-related death in women. Here, we were looking for the candidate microRNAs which is capable of regulating the HER2 receptor and the genes of its downstream. To this aim, preliminary bioinformatics analysis introduced hsa-miR-1254 (miR-1254) as a potential common regulator of HER2, HER3, PIK3R2, and AKT1 genes.

We present theoretical and experimental results showing the effects of incoherent population mixing on two-dimensional (2D) coherent excitation spectra that are measured via a time-integrated population and phase-sensitive detection. The technique uses four collinear ultrashort pulses and phase modulation to acquire two-dimensional spectra by isolating specific nonlinear contributions to the photoluminescence or photocurrent excitation signal. We demonstrate that an incoherent contribution to the measured line shape, arising from nonlinear population dynamics over the entire photoexcitation lifetime, generates a similar line shape to the expected 2D coherent spectra in condensed-phase systems.
