Application and interpretation of core elements of the 2015 NMOSD diagnostic criteria in routine clinical practice.

Background: We evaluated comprehension and application of the 2015 neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) criteria core elements by neurologists in Latin America (LATAM) who routinely diagnose and care for NMOSD patients by (i) identifying typical/suggestive NMOSD syndromes, (ii) detecting typical MRI NMOSD lesions and meeting MRI dissemination in space (DIS) criteria, and (iii) evaluating historical symptoms suggestive of NMOSD.
Methods: We conducted an anonymous, voluntary, self-administered web- and case-based survey cross-sectional study from October 2023 to January 2024 of neurologists identified through the LACTRIMS database. Questions were presented first through iterative clinical cases or imaging, followed by questions directly evaluating comprehension of definitions.
Handgrip strength and body mass index exhibit good predictive value for sarcopenia in patients on peritoneal dialysis.

Aim: The diagnosis of sarcopenia in patients on peritoneal dialysis (PD) in clinics is limited owing to its relatively complicated process and the need for expensive assessment equipment. This study aimed to develop and validate sex-specific nomogram models based on body mass index (BMI), handgrip strength, and other routine follow-up examination indicators to predict sarcopenia in patients on PD.
Methods: From March 2023 to February 2024, 699 eligible patients were recruited from the PD centers of two tertiary hospitals in southeastern China.

According to the literature, a number of anti-epileptic drugs (AEDs) have an ototoxic effect. The mechanism of hearing dysfunction due to the use of AEDs is not well known. The main clinical manifestations of the cochleotoxic effect of the drugs are: tinnitus, sensorineural hearing loss, impaired pitch perception, hyperacusis.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFUntil the beginning of the century, bleeding management was similar in elective surgeries or exsanguination scenarios: clotting tests were used to guide blood product orders and, while awaiting these results, an aggressive resuscitation with crystalloids was recommended. The high mortality rate in severe hemorrhages managed with this strategy endorsed the need for a special resuscitation plan. As a result, modifications were recommended to develop a new clinical approach to these patients, called "Damage Control Resuscitation".

Our study aims to evaluate and discuss the knowledge of autism among nurses, which is a social and health category often in close contact with autistic people. Given the limited exploration of awareness levels about autism among healthcare professionals, this study aims to investigate general and specific knowledge of autism within a group of nursing students enrolled in a master's degree.
