This report describes the symptoms of pesticide poisoning in a previously healthy teenage girl. After consuming unwashed grapes for several days, the girl developed the following symptoms: drowsiness, vomiting, truncal weakness and fasciculations in the tongue and hands. Blood tests confirmed exposure to a small amount of the organophosphate (OP) compound, a type of chemical found in certain pesticides. The girl was treated with supportive care and cholinesterase reactivators, which minimised the damage caused by OP poisoning. Within 48 hours, the girl's symptoms improved and she made a full recovery. This case highlights that OP poisoning can present without classic cholinergic crisis symptoms (SLUDGING), including miosis. Fasciculations, as observed in this case, are a significant clue to the diagnosis.

This study was conducted to monitor and evaluate the health risks of multiple organophosphorus pesticide residues in three characteristic fruits of Maragheh district, East Azerbaijan province. The Monte Carlo method was used to quantify the possible non-carcinogenic health risks associated with pesticide residues in adults and children. The residues of 17 pesticides in 36 samples were analysed using the QuEChERS extraction method coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS).

Hydrolysis and antioxidant activity of starch modified with phenolic extracts from grape pomace and sorghum bran under alkaline conditions.

Department of Consumer and Food Sciences, University of Pretoria, Private Bag X20, Hatfield, 0028, Pretoria, South Africa. Electronic address:

The effect of modification with phenolic extracts from grape pomace (GPE) and sorghum bran (SBE) under alkaline conditions for 6 and 12 h, with and without washing with aqueous ethanol (post modification) on the enzymatic hydrolysis as measured by viscosity decrease and antioxidant activity of maize starch was studied. Phenolic-modified starches showed lower rate of starch hydrolysis. The DSC of residues after enzyme hydrolysis showed the conversion of type I inclusion complexes in the unwashed to type II inclusion complexes in the washed phenolic-modified starches.

In this study, the samples of the spatial soil and organs of the grapevine (Vitis vinifera) cultivar Tamjanika were collected from the selected zones near the Mining and Smelting Complex Bor (East Serbia). They were analyzed by ICP-OES to determine the content of Cu, Zn, Pb, As, Cd, and Ni with the aim of ascertaining if these data may help in the assessment and improvement of the quality of environment in polluted areas such as Bor and its surrounding area. The results obtained from the calculated biological and enrichment factors, as well as from the Pearson correlation study and hierarchical cluster analysis confirmed that very useful information is recorded in plant organs: root, stem, leaves, and fruit.
