Cannabinoids are involved in physiological and neuromodulatory processes through their interactions with the human cannabinoid receptor-based endocannabinoid system. Their association with neurodegenerative diseases and brain reward pathways underscores the importance of evaluating and modulating cannabinoid activity for both understanding physiological mechanisms and developing therapeutic drugs. The use of agonists and antagonists could be strategic approaches for modulation. In this study, we introduce a bioelectronic sensor designed to monitor cannabinoid binding to receptors and assess their agonistic and antagonistic properties. We produced human cannabinoid receptor 1 (hCB1R) via an Escherichia coli expression system and incorporated it into nanodiscs (NDs). These hCB1R-NDs were then immobilized on a single-walled carbon nanotube field-effect transistor (swCNT-FET) to construct a bioelectronic sensing platform. This novel system can sensitively detect the cannabinoid ligand anandamide (AEA) at concentrations as low as 1 fM, demonstrating high selectivity and real-time response. It also successfully identified the hCB1R agonist Δ-tetrahydrocannabinol and observed that the hCB1R antagonist rimonabant diminished the sensor signal upon AEA binding, indicating the antagonism-based modulation of ligand interaction. Consequently, our bioelectronic sensing platform holds potential for ligand detection and analysis of agonism and antagonism.

Miniature bioelectronic implants promise revolutionary therapies for cardiovascular and neurological disorders. Wireless power transfer (WPT) is a significant method for miniaturization, eliminating the need for bulky batteries in today's devices. Despite successful demonstrations of millimetric battery-free implants in animal models, the robustness and efficiency of WPT are known to degrade significantly under misalignment incurred by body movements, respiration, heart beating, and limited control of implant orientation during surgery.

Flexible electronic devices in biomedicine, environmental monitoring, and brain-like computing have garnered significant attention. Among these, organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) have been spotlighted in flexible sensors and neuromorphic circuits for their low power consumption, high signal amplification, excellent biocompatibility, chemical stability, stretchability, and flexibility. However, OECTs will also face some challenges on the way to commercialized applications, including the need for improved long-term stability, enhanced performance of N-type materials, integration with existing technologies, and cost-effective manufacturing processes.

Smartphone-based colorimetric (bio)sensing is a promising alternative to conventional detection equipment for on-site testing, but it is often limited by sensitivity to lighting conditions. These issues are usually avoided using housings with fixed light sources, increasing the cost and complexity of the on-site test, where simplicity, portability, and affordability are a priority. In this study, we demonstrate that careful optimization of color space can significantly boost the performance of smartphone-based colorimetric sensing, enabling housing-free, illumination-invariant detection.
