Surface modification of biomedical materials and devices using versatile nanocomposite coatings holds great promise for improving functionalities to defend against life-threatening bacterial infections. In this study, a one-step surface modification strategy was developed to deposit gold nanorods (AuNRs)- and curcumin (CUR)-encapsulated zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) nanoparticles (AuNRs-ZIF-CUR NPs or AZC) onto phytic acid (PA)-ε-polylysine (Ply) network coatings. In the solution mixture of PA, Ply and AZC, PA interacted with Ply electrostatic interactions, and can also bind to AZC metal chelation. The as-formed AZC-PA-Ply aggregates could be deposited onto various substrates surface adhesion of PA and gravitational effects. The physicochemical and antibacterial properties of the AZC-PA-Ply network coatings on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrates were evaluated. The sustained release of zinc ions and CUR, as well as the contact-killing ability of Ply, endowed the AZC-PA-Ply network coatings with good antibacterial chemotherapeutic effects. In addition, the embedded AuNRs in the AZC-PA-Ply network coatings exhibited excellent photothermal conversion efficiency for the ablation of bacteria. Upon near-infrared (NIR) laser irradiation, the AZC-PA-Ply-coated PDMS surfaces exhibited strong antibacterial effects by disrupting the membrane integrity and cellular functions of the adhered bacteria. Thus, the AZC-PA-Ply network coatings displayed combined antibacterial chemotherapeutic and photothermal therapeutic effects. Furthermore, the AZC-PA-Ply-coated PDMS substrates exhibited effective bacterial infection prevention and good biocompatibility in an implant model. Hence, the versatile AZC-PA-Ply network coatings are potentially useful as a multi-modal antibacterial platform to eliminate infectious bacterial pathogens in biomedical applications.

A novel methodology for dataset augmentation in the semantic segmentation of coil-coated surface degradation is presented in this study. Deep convolutional generative adversarial networks (DCGAN) are employed to generate synthetic input-target pairs, which closely resemble real-world data, with the goal of expanding an existing dataset. These augmented datasets are used to train two state-of-the-art models, U-net, and DeepLabV3, for the precise detection of degradation areas around scribes.

Cephalopods produce dynamic colors and skin patterns for communication and camouflage via stratified networks of neuronally actuated yellow, red, and brown chromatophore organs, each filled with thousands of pigment granules. While compositional analysis of chromatophore granules in Doryteuthis pealeii reveals the pigments as ommochromes, the ultrastructural features of the granules and their effects on bulk coloration have not been explored. To investigate this, we isolated granules from specific colored chromatophores and imaged them using multiple modalities.

Tannic acid (TA) has attracted the attention of researchers as a promising organic ligand capable of forming metal-organic coordination networks with various metal ions at interfaces to impact surface properties. In this study, we innovatively reported a self-assembly method for surface decoration by depositing TA/Fe coatings on the surface of desalted duck egg white nanoparticles (DEWN), further studying the oil/water interfacial properties of the modified particles. The results showed that the ratio and concentration of TA to Fe could modulate interfacial properties.

In this study, we developed a novel composite catalytic hydrogel, which integrates excellent mechanical properties, catalytic activity, and sensing performance. Discarded hydrogel sensors are reused as templates for in-situ generation of metal nanoparticles, and multifunctional hydrogels combining sensing and catalysis are realized. Polyacrylamide (PAM) provides a three-dimensional network structure, while octadecyl methacrylate (SMA) acts as a hydrophobic association center, enhancing the structural stability of the hydrogel.

Background: Determining the benign or malignant status of indeterminate pulmonary nodules (IPN) with intermediate malignancy risk is a significant clinical challenge. Oral microbiota-lung cancer interactions have qualified oral microbiota as a promising non-invasive predictive biomarker in IPN.
Materials And Methods: Prospectively collected saliva, throat swabs, and tongue coating samples from 1040 IPN patients and 70 healthy controls across three hospitals.
