The development of a waste management and classification system based on deep learning and Internet of Things.

Environ Monit Assess

December 2024

Chongqing Key Laboratory of Non-Linear Circuit and Intelligent Information Processing, College of Electronic and Information Engineering, Southwest University, Chongqing, 400715, China.

Waste sorting is a key part of sustainable development. To maximize the recovery of resources and reduce labor costs, a waste management and classification system is established. In the system, we use Internet of Things (IoT) and edge computing to implement waste sorting and the systematic long-distance information transmission and monitoring.

A cost-effective adaptive repair strategy to mitigate DDoS-capable IoT botnets.

PLoS One

December 2024

School of Big Data & Software Engineering, Chongqing University, Chongqing, China.

Distributed denial of service (DDoS) is a type of cyberattack in which multiple compromised systems flood the bandwidth or resources of a single system, making the flooded system inaccessible to legitimate users. Since large-scale botnets based on the Internet of Things (IoT) have been hotbeds for launching DDoS attacks, it is crucial to defend against DDoS-capable IoT botnets effectively. In consideration of resource constraints and frequent state changes for IoT devices, they should be equipped with repair measures that are cost-effective and adaptive to mitigate the impact of DDoS attacks.

The Anatomy of Context.

Hippocampus

January 2025

Department of Cognitive and Psychological Sciences, Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island, USA.

For most of my career, I focused on understanding how and where spatial context, the place where things happen, is represented in the brain. My interest in this began in the early 1990's, during my postdoctoral training with David Amaral, when we defined the rodent homolog of the primate parahippocampal cortex, a region implicated in processing spatial and contextual information. We parceled out the caudal portion of the rat perirhinal cortex (PER) and called it the postrhinal cortex (POR).

Background: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a common injury in children. Though research on youth TBI has largely focused on high school students, this study describes selected school outcomes after TBI in the past 12 months among children aged 5-17 years.

Methods: Data from parent-proxy respondents from the pilot administration of the National Concussion Surveillance System (a random-digit-dial telephone survey with over 10,000 adult respondents) were examined.

Challenging perceptions about rural practice using narratives: a living library approach in medical education.

Front Med (Lausanne)

December 2024

Distributed Learning and Rural Initiatives, Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary, Calgary, AB, Canada.

Introduction: The shortage of physicians in rural Canada is a continuing challenge. Canadian medical schools have adapted strategies to increase the supply of rural physicians. This study appraises the effectiveness of the living library (also called Human Library©) in medical education, as an avenue for medical and pre-medical students to engage in dialogue with rural health professionals.
