We conducted this systematic review and meta-analysis to clarify the trend of precocious puberty (PP) incidence after the COVID-19 outbreak and explore potential contributing factors, such as age at presentation and body mass index standard deviation score (BMI SDS). Children visiting pediatric endocrinology clinics for the first time for suspected PP were included. We searched databases until February 28, 2023 for studies reporting various indicators of PP incidence before and during the pandemic. Total numbers of events and observations were recorded. A meta-analysis was performed to compare the odds of PP, BMI SDS, and age at presentation between the two periods. The dose-response relationships between time points (by number of years away from the pandemic) and PP risk were explored. In summary, a total of 32 studies including 24,200 participants were recruited. COVID-19 pandemic was associated with the increasing odds of PP among children referred for suspicious condition (OR 1.96; 95% CI 1.56-2.47; I2 = 54%; P < 0.001). Sensitivity analysis confirmed the robustness of the findings. BMI SDS did not vary between the two periods, while age at presentation was lower following the pandemic. PP incidence increased more rapidly during the pandemic period than during the prepandemic period.

Phototoxic reaction to oral terbinafine due to Tinea capitis in a child.

Acta Dermatovenerol Croat

November 2024

Prof. Ana Bakija-Konsuo, MD, PhD, Clinic for Dermatovenerology CUTIS, Vukovarska 22, Dubrovnik, Croatia;

We report the case of an 18-month-old boy who developed a phototoxic skin reaction to terbinafine on his scalp, ears, and face in the form of disseminated erythematous plaques, which resembled subacute lupus erythematosus (SCLE) in their clinical presentation. Skin changes appeared a short time after the boy was exposed to sunlight during the period of time when he was treated with oral terbinafine due to Microsporum canis fungal scalp infection. Tinea capitis is a common dermatophyte infection primarily affecting prepubertal children (1).

Safety and Efficacy of Long-term Use of Infliximab in Severe Juvenile Dermatomyositis - 12 Years of Follow-up.

Acta Dermatovenerol Croat

November 2024

Prof. Marija Jelušić, MD, PhD, Department of Paediatrics, University of Zagreb, School of Medicine, Division of Clinical Immunology, Rheumatology and Allergology, Centre of Reference for Paediatric and Adolescent Rheumatology of Ministry of Health of the Republic Croatia, University Hospital Centre Zagreb, Kispaticeva 12, 10 000 Zagreb, Croatia;

Juvenile dermatomyositis with emphasized vasculopathy is rare, but the most severe form of the disease, with a poor prognosis with relapsing and chronic course or, in some cases, lethal outcome. We present a case of a 19-year-old Caucasian female, who developed severe acute juvenile dermatomyositis with emphasized multisystem vasculopathy, including retinal vasculopathy and maculopathy (cotton-wool spots, retinal hemorrhages, macular edema) at the age of 8. Due to no response to standard treatment protocols and rapid worsening of clinical symptoms and laboratory findings, a TNF inhibitor (infliximab) was introduced after the third week of treatment resulting in complete normalisation of muscle enzyme levels and complete resolution of eye changes within the next 2 weeks with a gradual general recovery.

Background: Historically, percutaneous transcatheter left atrial appendage closure (LAAC) has been performed under general anesthesia (GA) with transesophageal echocardiographic images obtained by a noninvasive cardiologist and usually requires an overnight hospital stay. Alternatively, we present our single-center experience performing LAACs under deep sedation (DS), employing an echocardiographic technician instead of a noninvasive cardiologist, and expediting same-day discharge. Mid- to long-term outcomes were also evaluated with follow-up imaging at a 45-day visit.

We present a comprehensive genetic investigation of Late Neolithic (LN) and Early Copper Age (ECA) populations living in the Carpathian Basin, leveraging whole genome data from 125 previously unreported individuals. Using population genetics, kinship analyses and the study of networks of identity-by-descent haplotype segment sharing, we elucidate the social and genetic dynamics of these communities between 4800-3900 cal BCE. Despite changes in settlement patterns, burial practices, and material culture, we document a high degree of genetic continuity.

Background: There is no consensus on the clinical utility of 'routine' diagnostic cardiac catheterisation in patients with Fontan palliation in the absence of symptoms or haemodynamic lesions.

Objective: We sought to evaluate whether diagnostic cardiac catheterisation for a variety of indications led to a change in the clinical management of patients with a Fontan circulation.

Methods: All adult patients (≥16 years) with Fontan palliation undergoing diagnostic cardiac catheterisation at our institution from 2016 to 2019 were included retrospectively.
