Background: Area-under-the-curve (AUC)-directed vancomycin therapy is recommended; however, AUC estimation in critically ill children is difficult owing to the need for multiple samples and lack of informative models.
Methods: The authors prospectively enrolled critically ill children receiving intravenous (IV) vancomycin for suspected infection and evaluated the accuracy of Bayesian estimation of AUC from a single, optimally timed sample. During the dosing interval, when clinical therapeutic drug monitoring was performed, an optimally timed sample was collected, which was determined for each subject using an established population pharmacokinetic model and the multiple model optimal function of Pmetrics, a nonparametric population pharmacokinetic modeling software.

Objectives: This study investigates whether the intra-operative administration of intravenous tranexamic acid (TXA), known for its hemostatic and potential anti-inflammatory properties, affects the incidence of heterotopic ossification (HO) following surgery for elbow fracture-dislocations.
Methods: Design: Prospective, randomized clinical trial.
Setting: Hand and Upper Extremity Surgery Unit.

Objectives: Intravenous midazolam is widely used for sedation in critically ill children. Sometimes, these children develop a paediatric delirium (PD). Our aim was to determine the relationship between midazolam serum concentration and the development of new PD in critically ill children.

For operant self-administration, permanent intravenous cannulas need to remain open and operational for months without infections or blockages. Here, we report retrospectively on our experiences and observations using different access systems during three studies. We identified a refined method for vena jugularis cannulation that is a vast improvement for the animals, biotechnicians and researchers.

Introduction: Ultrasound imaging (US) is the method of choice to assess the canine prostate gland. Whilst recent studies have documented the role of castration in the development of prostatic neoplasia, little is known about parenchymal and perfusion features of the normal and abnormal prostate in neutered dogs. No data are available concerning prostatic changes after the first 90 days following castration.
