Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have shown promise in enhancing the stability of biomolecules. Herein, biliverdin (BVD), a photoacoustic (PA) and fluorescent agent, was immobilized within the pores of NH-MIL-101 (Fe) (FeMOFs) and on the surface of CuBTC crystallites (CuMOFs). MOFs were found to enhance the fluorescence emission and quench the PA intensity of biliverdin. Fluorescence and PA studies, in tandem with DFT simulations, demonstrated that the spectral interactions between MOFs and BVD resulted from interactions between biliverdin and the MOF pores and surfaces in addition to alterations in the HOMO-LUMO energy gap. The MOF internal structure of the MOF played a role in BVD loading, with the FeMOFs enabling greater BVD encapsulation, while CuMOF interactions with BVD primarily took place on the MOF surface. The role of these surface pore interactions in the release of biliverdin was explored. This study demonstrates that the effects of the MOF internal structure, surface interactions, and energy interactions should be taken into consideration for biomolecule loading in MOFs.

Fracture risk calculators, such as the Fracture Risk Assessment Tool (FRAX), calculate the risk of major osteoporotic (MOF) and hip fracture, but do not account for the excess risk of fracture in people with diabetes. We examined the predictive performance of FRAX without BMD in ethnically diverse, older patients with diabetes. Patients included were between ages 65-89 from the Kaiser Permanente Northern California Diabetes Registry and not already taking osteoporosis medications.

Prediction of hip fracture by high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography in older Swedish women.

J Bone Miner Res

January 2025

Sahlgrenska Osteoporosis Centre, Department of Internal Medicine and Clinical Nutrition, Institute of Medicine, University of Gothenburg, Gothenburg, Sweden.

The socioeconomic burden of hip fractures, the most severe osteoporotic fracture outcome, is increasing and the current clinical risk assessment lacks sensitivity. This study aimed to develop a method for improved prediction of hip fracture by incorporating measurements of bone microstructure and composition derived from high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography (HR-pQCT). In a prospective cohort study of 3028 community-dwelling women aged 75 to 80, all participants answered questionnaires and underwent baseline examinations of anthropometrics and bone by dual x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and HR-pQCT.

Tailoring molecular diffusion in core-shell zeolite imidazolate framework composites realizes efficient kinetic separation of xylene isomers.

The separation of xylene isomers is a critical and energy-intensive process in the petrochemical industry, primarily due to their closely similar molecular structures and boiling points. In this work, we report the synthesis and application of a novel core-shell zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF) composite, ZIF-65@ZIF-67, designed to significantly enhance the kinetic separation of xylene isomers through a synergistic "shell-gated diffusion and core-facilitated transport" strategy. The external ZIF-67 shell selectively restricts the diffusion of larger isomers (MX and OX), while the internal ZIF-65 core accelerates the diffusion of PX, thereby amplifying the diffusion differences among the isomers.

Nano-Metal-Organic Frameworks Isolated in Mesoporous Structures.

Adv Mater

January 2025

School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Testing Center, Yangzhou University, Yangzhou, 225009, P. R. China.

As an alternative to bulk counterparts, metal-organic framework (MOF) nanoparticles isolated within conductive mesoporous carbon matrices are of increasing interest for electrochemical applications. Although promising, a "clean" carbon surface is generally associated with poor compatibility and weak interactions with metal/ligand precursors, which leads to the growth of MOFs with inhomogeneous particle sizes on outer pore walls. Here, a general methodology for in situ synthesis of eight nanoMOF composites within mesochannels with high dispersity and stability are reported.

Introducing chiral molecules into metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) to obtain chiral MOFs (CMOFs), the tunability of their structures makes them a highly anticipated class of chiral materials for electrochemical sensing. However, the structure of CMOFs is often limited by synthesis challenges, and introducing chiral molecules into MOFs often leads to a decrease in their internal space. This study introduces a defect engineering strategy into the synthesis of CMOFs to obtain CMOFs with defects, which is an efficient synthesis method.
