Article Abstract
Purpose: The US medical education system has a long-standing history of omitting evidence and perpetuating false pseudo-scientific beliefs on the complex and nuanced relationships between race, racism, and health disparities. There is an urgent need to identify and address the historical influence of systemic racism on the current curriculum, organization, and culture of US medical education. The goal of this study was to understand Black women medical student perspectives on race and racism in current medical school training and their recommendations to inform anti-racist action in US medical education.
Method: The authors conducted a critical qualitative study to understand the perspectives of Black women medical students on issues surrounding race and racism in relation to US medical education. To their knowledge, this is the first study to use qualitative research methods to understand current thinking on the need for anti-racist pedagogy in medical school education among Black women medical students in the US.
Results: The interviews revealed critical limitations in the teaching of race, racism, and racial disparities, including a lack of historical depth, continuity, and evaluation of this content; lack of actionable guidance to address racial disparities in clinical practice; and dissonance between emerging anti-racist content and national licensing examinations. The qualitative data yielded several anti-racist strategies and practices that can be implemented in US medical schools to redress historical curriculum limitations and better prepare future generations of physicians to care for marginalized populations.
Conclusions: This study provides actionable feedback on needed reforms to redress US medical school curriculum limitations as it relates to race, racism, and racial disparities.
Disparities in coronavirus disease 2019 mortality are driven by inequalities in group-specific incidence rates (IRs), case fatality rates (CFRs), and their interaction. For emerging infections, such as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2, group-specific IRs and CFRs change on different time scales, and inequities in these measures may reflect different social and medical mechanisms. To be useful tools for public health surveillance and policy, analyses of changing mortality rate disparities must independently address changes in IRs and CFRs.
Focusing on three specific organizations-The Terrence Higgins Trust (THT), Blackliners, and The NAZ Project (Naz)-this article explores the different ways in which voluntary organizations responded to Black gay men (BGM) in Britain during the AIDS crisis from the 1980s to 2000. Illustrating how the place of BGM in Britain at this time was multidimensional and often contradictory, the first section demonstrates how they required safer-sex messaging that took account of the heterogeneous ways in which they experienced the intersection of racism and homophobia. Situated in this context, the second section explores for the first time the well-documented work of THT as it applied to BGM.

We propose a diagnostic framework for distinguishing between scientific research that is merely controversial and that which is abhorrent. Our framework places research projects along two axes of a value-harm map. Most research, fortunately, is both valuable and harmless.

Shaped by preimmigration histories of British colonization and the caste system and the Indian diasporic postimmigration, experiences of physical and psychological displacement alongside racism in the United States contribute to the complexity of identity for this community. Although existing racial and ethnic identity models offer valuable frameworks, they may not fully capture the nuanced in-between spaces created by the intersectionality of ethnicity and race for Asian Indian Americans in the United States.
