Two non-specific sequential extraction methods utilising chemometric data processing (chemometric identification of substrates and element distribution, CISED) have been developed and used to determine the physico-chemical partitioning of potentially harmful elements (PHE) in certified reference material BCR CRM 701 (lake sediment). A miniaturized centrifugation method in which the sample was extracted on a filter insert in a polypropylene centrifuging tube, and a quasi-flow through method in which the sample was supported on a TX40 filter in a 47 mm in-line polycarbonate filter holder, gave similar results. The CISED data processing identified nine components.

In situ Raman characterization of minerals and degradation processes in a variety of cultural and geological heritage sites.

Spectrochim Acta A Mol Biomol Spectrosc

February 2017

Museo de Altamira, Ministerio de Educación, Cultura y Deportes, 39330 Santillana del Mar, Cantabria, Spain.

We test the capabilities of in situ Raman spectroscopy for non-destructive analysis of degradation processes in invaluable masterpieces, as well as for the characterization of minerals and prehistoric rock-art in caves. To this end, we have studied the mechanism of decay suffered by the 15th-century limestone sculptures that decorate the retro-choir of Burgos Cathedral (N Spain). In situ Raman probe detected hydrated sulfate and nitrate minerals on the sculptures, which are responsible for the decay of the original limestone.
