The O3-type Na[NiCoMn]O cathodes have received significant attention in sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) due to their high energy density. However, challenges such as structural instability and interfacial instability against an electrolyte solution limit their practical use in SIBs. In this study, the single-crystalline O3-type Na[NiCoMn]O (SC-NCM) cathode has been designed and synthesized to effectively relieve the degradation pathways of the polycrystalline O3-type Na[NiCoMn]O (PC-NCM) cathode for SIBs. The mechanically robust SC-NCM due to the absence of pores in the particles enhances tolerance to particle cracking, resulting in stable cycling performance with a cycle retention of 73% over 350 cycles. Moreover, the proposed SC-NCM is synthesized using a simple and cost-effective molten-salt synthetic route without the complex quenching process typically associated with PC-NCM synthesis methods, showing good practical applicability. This study will provide an innovative direction for the development of advanced cathode materials for practical SIBs.

Under the background of surging global demand for batteries and scarcity of Li resources, sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are attracting attention as a potential alternative with their unique advantages, and the layered transition metal oxides therein are considered to be one of the most promising cathode materials. In this paper, firstly, the diversity of cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries is systematically introduced, as well as the layered oxide structures among them are categorized, and then it focuses on the O3-type sodium-rich NaMO, which is promising for large-scale commercial applications, illustrating the development and mechanism of anion redox. Excess Na transforms the transition metal layer into the mixed NaMOlayer, leading to the formation of localized configuration Na-O-Na.

O3-type layered oxide materials are considered to be a highly suitable cathode for sodium-ion batteries (NIBs) due to their appreciable specific capacity and energy density. However, rapid capacity fading caused by serious structural changes and interfacial degradation hampers their use. A novel Sn-modified O3-type layered NaNiFeMnO cathode is presented, with improved high-voltage stability through simultaneous bulk Sn doping and surface coating in a scalable one-step process.

Layered transition metal oxides Na MO (M=transition metal) with P2 or O3 structure have attracted attention in sodium-ion batteries (NIBs). A universal law is found to distinguish structural competition between P2 and O3 types based on the ratio of interlayer distances of the alkali metal layer d and transition-metal layer d . The ratio of about 1.
