Cobalt has the highest Curie temperature () among the elemental ferromagnetic metals and has a hexagonal close-packed (HCP) structure at room temperature. In this study, HCP Co was thinned to the thickness of several () unit cells along the -axis and then passivated by halogen atoms, thus being named CoX (X = F, Cl, Br and I). For CoX and CoX, all of them are not only kinetically but also thermodynamically stable from the viewpoint of the phonon spectra and molecular dynamics. Similar to HCP Co, two-dimensional (2D) CoF, CoCl and CoX (X = Cl, Br and I) are still ferromagnetic metals within the Stoner model but CoX (X = Br and I) is a ferromagnetic half-metal with the coexistence of the metallic behavior for one spin and the insulating behavior for the other spin. Taking into account the spin-orbital coupling (SOC), the easy-magnetization axis is within the plane where the magnetization is isotropic, making it look like a 2D XY magnet. Applying a critical biaxial strain could lead to an easy-magnetization axis changing from the in-plane to the out-of-plane direction. Finally, we use classical Monte Carlo simulations to estimate the Curie temperature () which is as high as 957 and 510 K for CoF and CoCl, respectively, because of the strong direct exchange interaction. Different from being obtained by mechanical or liquid exfoliation from van der Waals layered structures, our study opens up new possibilities to search for novel 2D ferromagnets from the elemental ferromagnets and provides opportunities for realizing realistic ultra-thin spintronic devices.

The cadmium-rich intermetallic compounds RhCd ( = Ca, Sr, Y, La-Nd, Sm-Lu) were synthesized from the elements in sealed tantalum tubes. The elements were reacted in an induction furnace and the samples were post-annealed to increase phase purity and crystallinity. The RhCd phases crystallize with the cubic CeCrAl type structure, space group 3̄.

We conduct a systematic investigation of the role of Hubbard U corrections in electronic structure calculations of two-dimensional (2D) materials containing 3 transition metals. Specifically, we use density functional theory (DFT) with the PBE and PBE+U approximations to calculate the crystal structure, band gaps, and magnetic parameters of 638 monolayers. Based on a comprehensive comparison to experiments we first establish that the inclusion of the U correction worsens the accuracy for the lattice constants.

In this study, a relationship between climate indices (local - air temperatures, and wide-scale - North Atlantic Oscillation) and first arrival dates (FAD) of a short-distant migratory bird, the Common Wood Pigeon (Columba palumbus) at a breeding site in SE Poland (Lublin) was investigated. Temporal patterns of FAD on a multi-year scale (20 years within 39 years between 1982 and 2020) were also studied. Additionally, correlations between mean air temperature at Lublin and sites along the spring migration route with various distances from the breeding site and various time lags were searched for.

Previous health impact assessments of temperature-related mortality in Europe indicated that the mortality burden attributable to cold is much larger than for heat. Questions remain as to whether climate change can result in a net decrease in temperature-related mortality. In this study, we estimated how climate change could affect future heat-related and cold-related mortality in 854 European urban areas, under several climate, demographic and adaptation scenarios.

Developing purely organic room-temperature magnetic semiconductors has been a long-sought goal in the material community toward the simultaneous control of spin and charge. Organic cocrystals, known for their structural versatility and multifunctionality, are ideal candidates for these magnetoelectric coupling applications. However, organic room-temperature magnetic semiconductor cocrystals have rarely been reported, and their mechanisms remain poorly understood due to the complexity of cocrystal structures.
