The global decline of species necessitates intensive conservation efforts, including ex-situ breeding programs to safeguard endangered populations. However, managing welfare and reproduction in zoological gardens can present several challenges. This study aims to explore behaviors and endocrinological responses of two specimens of fossa (Cryptoprocta ferox) under human care.

Endocrine diagnostics currently depend on the ability to measure low and high concentrations of diagnostic hormones using immunoassays. This often is challenging in species other than humans, dogs, cats, and horses due to lack of validated assays and reference intervals. There are strategies to approach endocrine testing in zoo, wildlife, and zoologic companion animals but caution is needed in interpreting results.

Bone resorption markers that can be measured in urine, such as C-telopeptide of type I collagen (CTX-I), offer a non-invasive solution to assess bone growth. Although measurement of urinary CTX-I levels has been applied extensively in human studies, its use in other species is so far limited to a few clinical studies.

The endocrine and neuroendocrine systems exert powerful and broad control over the regulation of homeostasis in animals. Secreted hormones play significant roles in lifetime-related events such as germ cell development, sexual maturation, development, metamorphosis, aging, feeding, and energy metabolism. Additionally, hormones, particularly sex steroid hormones, are involved in reproduction, including sexual behavior and dimorphism.
