Published: December 2024

Electronic structure of carbon suboxide, CO, has been recently described as OC→C←CO having two lone pairs at the central carbon atom, thereby called as "Carbones". Although it has a linear geometry, the presence of two lone pairs comes to fore when its reactivity is analyzed with two protons. However, no attention had been paid on its alternating reactivity with hydride ions. Herein, detailed quantum chemical calculations predict that carbon suboxide can also have significant hydride ion affinity. This reactivity is in tune with σπ carbene character of carbon suboxide. This study also shows that such a σπ carbene character is also prevalent in carbodiphosphorane, C(PH). This bonding situation has been hitherto unexplored in "Carbone" chemistry.

The oligomers of carbon suboxide, known as red carbon, exhibit a highly conjugated structure and semiconducting properties. Upon mild heat treatment, it transforms into a carbonaceous framework rich in oxygen surface terminations, called oxocarbon. In this study, the abundant oxygen functionalities are harnessed as anchors to create oxocarbon-supported nanohybrid electrocatalysts.

Cyanoketene is a fundamental molecule that is actively being searched for in the interstellar medium. Its deprotonated form (cyanoketenate) is a heterocumulene that is isoelectronic to carbon suboxide whose structure has been the subject of debate. However, the investigation of cyanoketene and its derivatives is hampered by the lack of practical synthetic routes to these compounds.

The carbon suboxide anion with an asymmetric zigzag structure, CO, which was recently characterized in a solid neon matrix, has not been observed in the gas phase. Here, we have experimentally generated CO in a supersonic plasma jet expansion and studied it by negative ion photoelectron spectroscopy. A spectral analysis based on the calculated Franck-Condon factors, in combination with quantum chemical calculations, has for the first time yielded a determination of the electron affinity of the neutral carbon suboxide, EA = +0.

Carbon suboxide (C O ) is a unique molecule able to polymerize spontaneously into highly conjugated light-absorbing structures at temperatures as low as 0 °C. Despite obvious advantages, little is known about the nature and the functional properties of this carbonaceous material. In this work, the aim is to bring "red carbon," a forgotten polymeric semiconductor, back to the community's attention.
