Three organic-inorganic metal iodides, namely, (NH)(l-hp)ZnI (), [Cd(l-hp)]CdI (), and (l-Hhp)(l-hp)PbI (), have been synthesized using l-homoproline (l-hp) as the structure-directing agent. These compounds feature different noncentrosymmetric structures and optical properties. In particular, compound shows a large second-harmonic-generation response of 3.4 times that of KHPO. Density functional theory calculations were performed to gain insight into its structure-property relationship.

Bone is a natural mineral-organic nanocomposite protecting internal organs and allowing mobility. Through the ages, numerous strategies have been developed for repairing bone defects and fixing fractures. Several generations of bone repair biomaterials have been proposed, either based on metals, ceramics, glasses, or polymers, depending on the clinical need, the maturity of technologies, and knowledge of the natural constitution of the bone tissue to be repaired.

The development of aqueous zinc metal batteries (AZMBs) is hampered by dendrites and side reactions induced by reactive HO. In this study, a hydrated eutectic electrolyte with restrictive water consisting of zinc trifluoromethanesulfonate (Zn(OTf)), 1,3-propanediol (PDO), and water is developed to improve the stability of the anode/electrolyte interface in AZMBs via the formation of a water-deficient interface. Additionally, PDO participates in the Zn solvation structure and inhibits the movement of water molecules.

Intrinsic Mechanical Effects on the Activation of Carbon Catalysts.

J Am Chem Soc

January 2025

CAS Key Laboratory of Nanosystem and Hierarchical Fabrication, National Center for Nanoscience and Technology (NCNST), Beijing 100190, China.

The mechanical effects on carbon-based metal-free catalysts (C-MFCs) have rarely been explored, despite the global interest in C-MFCs as substitutes for noble metal catalysts. Stress is ubiquitous, whereas its dedicated study is severely restricted due to its frequent entanglement with other structural variables, such as dopants, defects, and interfaces in catalysis. Herein, we report a proof-of-concept study by establishing a platform to continuously apply strain to a highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) lamina, simultaneously collecting electrochemical signals.

Variations of microbiota and metabolites in rhizosphere soil of Carmona microphylla at the co-contaminated site with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and heavy metals.

Ecotoxicol Environ Saf

January 2025

Key Laboratory of Pollution Processes and Environmental Criteria (Ministry of Education) / Tianjin Key Laboratory of Environmental Remediation and Pollution Control, College of Environmental Science and Engineering, Nankai University, Tianjin 300350, China. Electronic address:

Co-contamination with organic/inorganic compounds is common in industrial area and poses a great risk to local soil ecological environment. In this study, an operating ink factory site co-contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs, mild to moderate pollution level) and heavy metals (HMs, heavy pollution level) was selected and screened for native vegetation, Carmona microphylla. High-throughput sequencing and metabolomics were mainly used to investigate the responses of soil bacteria and metabolites to the composite pollution and rhizosphere effect.

The First Molecular Ferroelectric Mott Insulator.

Adv Mater

January 2025

Jiangsu Key Laboratory for Science and Applications of Molecular Ferroelectrics, Southeast University, Nanjing, 211189, P. R. China.

With the discovery of colossal magnetoresistance materials and high-temperature superconductors, Mott insulators can potentially undergo a transition from insulating state to metallic state. Here, in molecular ferroelectrics system, a Mott insulator of (CHN)VO has been first synthesized, which is a 2D organic-inorganic ferroelectric with composition of layered vanadium oxide and quinuclidine ring. Interestingly, accompanied by the ferroelectric phase transition, (CHN)VO changes sharply in conductivity.
