Breaking the silence: The role of extracellular vesicles in unraveling the diagnosis and treatment of endometriosis.

Extracell Vesicles Circ Nucl Acids

December 2023

Department of Autoimmune Diseases, Institute of Molecular Medicine, Feinstein Institute for Medical Research, Northwell Health, 350 Community Drive, Manhasset, New York, NY 11030, USA.

Cell-to-cell communication is believed to be facilitated by membrane-bound vesicles called extracellular vesicles (EVs), which are released by cells. Protein, lipids, and nucleic acids are major cargo of EVs and are transported in these vesicles. Depending on the parent and recipient cell types, they can affect a wide variety of biological processes in the tissues to which they are delivered.

Pathogenesis of endometriosis (EN) is still unknown, but growing evidence suggests that immune regulation may be important, and the pattern of peripheral immune changes in reproductive women with EN has yet to be fully explored. In this study, we conducted a comprehensive and systematic analysis of immune cell subsets within T cells, B cells, NK cells, and γδ T cells in peripheral blood (PB) samples from women with EN, women with uterine fibroids (UF) but without EN (UF-alone), and healthy controls using multi-parameter flow cytometry. Our findings revealed that UF, a common comorbidity of EN, exhibited similar peripheral immune features to EN, particularly in T cell and B cell immunity.

Unraveling the complexity of follicular fluid: insights into its composition, function, and clinical implications.

J Ovarian Res

November 2024

School of Basic Medical Sciences, Jiangxi Medical College, Nanchang University, Nanchang, 330019, China.

Follicular fluid (FF) plays a vital role in the bidirectional communication between oocytes and granulosa cells (GCs), regulating and promoting oocyte growth and development. This fluid constitutes a complex microenvironment, rich in various molecules including hormones, growth factors, cytokines, lipids, proteins, and extracellular vesicles. Understanding the composition and metabolic profile of follicular fluid is important for investigating ovarian pathologies such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and endometriosis.

Andrology Unit and Service of Lifestyle Medicine in UroAndrology, Local Health Authority (ASL) Salerno, Coordination Unit of the Network for Environmental and Reproductive Health (Eco-FoodFertility Project), "St. Francis of Assisi Hospital", Salerno, Italy.

Introduction: Bisphenol A (BPA) is a common contaminant widely used in many industrial sectors. Because of its wide use and dispersion, it can be accumulated in living human bodies through both oral assumption and nondietary routes. BPA exhibits hormone-like properties, falling under the class of endocrine disruptors; therefore, it can alter relevant physiological functions.

Endometriosis is a chronic gynecological disorder affecting millions of women worldwide, causing chronic pelvic pain, dyspareunia, dysmenorrhea, and infertility, and severely impacting their quality of life. Treatment primarily involves hormonal therapies and surgical excision, but high recurrence rates and the economic burden are substantial. With these challenges, significant discussion surrounds the potential role of dietary patterns in managing endometriosis, making it necessary to bridge this critical gap.
