Purpose: The purpose of our study was to perform a systematic review to assess and compare the effectiveness of the air abrasion technique with that of the conventional acid-etching technique performed before the placement of pit and fissure sealants.

Materials And Methods: A search of studies was conducted in May 2021 using PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar databases. Clinical trials in the English language between 1997 and 2019 were included. The quality of the studies was analyzed using the Cochrane Collaboration tool.

Results: The search retrieved 276 references, out of which seven studies were included for a qualitative analysis. In these seven studies, the risk of bias across the Cochrane tool's domains varied from low to high. All the included studies considered acid-etching as a comparator to air abrasion technique either used alone or as an adjunct to acid-etching technique.

Conclusion: When coverage of sealants or their retentivity was compared at different time intervals, it was more in the acid-etching group than in the air abrasion group. Similarly, carious lesions were seen more in the air abrasion group than in the acid-etching group. The air abrasion technique followed by acid-etching brought superior retention properties of sealants than the acid-etching technique alone.

Developing superwetting coatings with environmental adaptability is critical for sustainable industrial applications. However, traditional anti-wetting coatings often fall short due to their susceptibility to environmental factors (UV light, temperature, mold growth, and abrasion) and inadequate stain resistance in complex media. Herein, a durable ex situ pH-responsive coating with reversible wettability switching, engineered by integrating hydrophobic polydimethylsiloxane and tertiary amine structures is presented.

Introduction And Aims: We aimed to investigate the efficacy of air-polishing in restoring the original tooth colour of standardised tobacco-stained tooth specimens.

Methods: Seventy-two specimens consisting of half dentine and half enamel were daily exposed to the smoke of five cigarettes in an automated smoking chamber. Four repetitions of a 14-day smoking cycle were performed.

Background: This study aimed to evaluate the accuracy of laser fluorescence (LF) readings in detection of caries removal by various techniques (CRTs).

Methods: A hundred and eighty extracted human molar teeth included in the study which were scored 3, 4, and 5 according to ICDAS. Each score group was randomly assigned to 4 subgroups according to CRT including ceramic bur (Group A), carbide bur (Group B), carbide bur with alumina abrasion (Group C), and carbide bur with bioactive glass (BAG) abrasion (Group D) (n = 15 for each group).

Severe bilateral subcutaneous emphysema after prophylactic treatment: a case report.

J Dent Anesth Pain Med

December 2024

Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Dental Research Institute, School of Dentistry, Seoul National University, Seoul, Republic of Korea.

Subcutaneous emphysema is the accumulation of gas or air in loose subcutaneous connective tissue. The use of air-driven handpieces in dental procedures is a common iatrogenic cause of intraoral mucogingival barrier disruption by high-pressure air. This case report describes a 60-year-old woman who underwent prophylactic periodontal treatment with an air-abrasive device and subsequently developed severe bilateral subcutaneous emphysema, extending from the temporal region to the thoracic and mediastinal spaces.

With the rapid development of the aerospace, automobile, and ocean industries, there is an urgent need for the fabrication of high-performance polymer matrix composites with low friction and wear in wide temperature ranges. In this paper, polytetrafluoroethylenes (PTFEs) doped with polyether-ether-ketone (PEEK), carbon fiber (CF), and TiC were prepared, and the effects of testing temperatures from room temperature to 250 °C in air conditions were investigated. The results showed that the friction coefficient of the PTFE matrix composites had no obviously changing trend, while the wear resistance properties were significantly improved.
