Half of kindergarten teachers split children into higher and lower ability groups for reading or math. In national data, we predicted kindergarten ability group placement using linear and ordinal logistic regression with classroom fixed effects. In fall, test scores were the best predictors of group placement, but there was bias favoring girls, high-SES (socioeconomic status) children, and Asian Americans, who received higher placements than their scores alone would predict. Net of SES, there was no bias against placing black children in higher groups. By spring, one third of kindergartners moved groups, and high-SES children moved up more than their score gains alone would predict. Teacher-reported behaviors (e.g., attentiveness, approaches to learning) helped explain girls' higher placements, but did little to explain the higher placements of Asian American and high-SES children.

Introduction: It is unclear if intracranial pressure monitoring (ICPM) after open cranial procedures (craniotomy or craniectomy) (OC) for traumatic brain injury is associated with mortality. We hypothesized that ICPM placed early after OC was associated with lower mortality compared to no ICPM or delayed ICPM placement.
Methods: Using 2020-2021 data from the American College of Surgeons Trauma Quality Improvement Program, patients ≥16 y from level 1 and 2 trauma centers who underwent OC were divided into two groups: ICPM placed within 72 h of OC (early) and no ICPM or ICPM placed after 72 h (none/delayed).

Introduction: Surgical site infection (SSI) after lower extremity (LE) bypass surgery is associated with longer length of stay, higher hospital cost, increased morbidity, and even graft loss. Silver impregnated dressings have been used by other surgical subspecialties to decrease SSI with reported success. The National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) published a national expected rate of 7.

Laparo-endoscopic hernia surgery is recommended by various international bodies. However, its uptake by general surgeon is low. We aim to assess the impact of Three Dimensional (3D) endovision system in learning laparoscopic transabdominal preperitoneal (TAPP) repair of groin hernia and transferability of skills acquired from 3D to the Two Dimensional (2D) environment.

Purpose: Trabecular micro-bypass devices (TBDs) such as the iStent series (Glaukos Corporation, Laguna Hills, CA), are effective in reducing intraocular pressure (IOP). However, precise placement of TBDs is crucial in achieving surgical efficacy, as device malpositioning may lead to suboptimal IOP reduction. We demonstrate two novel intra-operative signs to aid confirmation of accurate iStent placement, without reliance on imaging technologies.

Background: Amphetamines possess sympathomimetic properties that can affect cerebral vasculature though conflicting reports exist about their effect on vasospasm risk and clinical outcomes in aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage. This study aimed to characterize the impact of recent amphetamine use on vasospasm development in aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage as well as neurological outcomes.
Methods: We retrospectively screened 441 consecutive patients admitted with a diagnosis of subarachnoid hemorrhage who underwent at least one cerebral digital subtraction angiogram.
