In this commentary, we explore the significance of traditional Black midwifery practices across diaspora and global contexts, focusing on their potential for birth justice. By integrating cultural, health, and historical perspectives, we highlight the transformative power of traditional Black midwifery. Furthermore, we address the challenges that Black traditional and formally trained midwives face within contemporary health care systems. Barriers such as legal restrictions, limited recognition, and inadequate resources hinder the integration of Black midwifery into formal health care frameworks. Finally, strategies to promote collaboration, cultural, and respectful dialogue between traditional Black midwives and modern health care providers are proposed to overcome these challenges.

Biochar for ameliorating soil fertility and microbial diversity: From production to action of the black gold.

iScience

January 2025

Department of Environmental Science and Engineering, School of Engineering and Sciences, SRM University-AP, Amaravati, Andhra Pradesh 522240, India.

This article evaluated different production strategies, characteristics, and applications of biochar for ameliorating soil fertility and microbial diversity. The biochar production techniques are evolving, indicating that newer methods (including hydrothermal and retort carbonization) operate with minimum temperatures, yet resulting in high yields with significant improvements in different properties, including heating value, oxygen functionality, and carbon content, compared to the traditional methods. It has been found that the temperature, feedstock type, and moisture content play critical roles in the fabrication process.

[Construction of black-bone silky fowl (Gallus gallus domesticus) families based on genetic diversity].

Zhongguo Zhong Yao Za Zhi

December 2024

State Key Laboratory for Quality Ensurance and Sustainable Use of Dao-di Herbs, National Resource Center for Chinese Materia Medica, China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences Beijing 100700, China.

Black-bone silky fowls(Gallus gallus domesticus) have a long history of medicinal use, with the origin in Taihe county, Jiangxi province. The unclear family composition, inbreeding rate, and effective population size were inconducive to the resource conservation or breed improvement of black-bone silky fowls. A genome-wide analysis was performed to evaluate the genetic diversity of 80 black-bone silky fowls from random mating in three farms in 2021 in terms of minor allele frequency(MAF), expected heterozygosity(H_e), observed heterozygosity(H_o), effective population size(N_e), and runs of homozygosity(ROH).

Overcrowding in emergency departments (EDs) is a global challenge, leading to prolonged waiting times and adverse patient outcomes. Telemedicine has emerged as a promising solution, enabling remote consultation, triage, and real-time specialist input. Despite its growing application, limited systematic research exists on its specific role in ED triage and care.

Unlabelled: This study investigates the optimization of bioactive components in thermosonicated black carrot juice using response surface methodology (RSM) and gradient boosting (GB) modeling techniques. Thermosonication, a combination of ultrasound and heat, was applied to enhance the nutritional quality of black carrot juice, which is rich in anthocyanins, phenolic compounds, and antioxidants. The study examined the effects of temperature, processing time, and ultrasonic amplitude on total carotenoid content (TCC), total anthocyanin content (TAC), ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), and total phenolic content.
