Conjugated polymers (CPs) with polar side chains can conduct electronic and ionic charges simultaneously, making them promising for bioelectronics, electrocatalysis and energy storage. Recent work showed that adding alkyl spacers between CP backbones and polar side chains improved electronic charge carrier mobility, reduced swelling and enhanced stability, without compromising ion transport. However, how alkyl spacers impact polymer backbone conformation and, subsequently, electronic properties remain unclear.

Matching P- and N-type Organic Electrochemical Transistor Performance Enables a Record High-gain Complementary Inverter.

Adv Mater

December 2024

State Key Laboratory of Polymer Physics and Chemistry & Key Laboratory of Polymer Science and Technology, Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Changchun, 130022, P. R. China.

The charge transport of channel materials in n-type organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) is greatly limited by the adverse effects of electrochemical doping, posing a long-standing puzzle for the community. Herein, an n-type conjugated polymer with glycolated side chains (n-PT3) is introduced. This polymer can adapt to electrochemical doping and create more organized nanostructures, mitigating the adverse effects of electrochemical doping.

Two Is Better than One: How the Addition of Multiple Biodegradable Polymers Can Improve Organic Thin-Film Transistor Performance.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

December 2024

Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, University of Ottawa, 161 Louis Pasteur, Ottawa, Ontario K1N 6N5, Canada.

Developing sustainable electronics requires using materials that are either recyclable or biodegradable, without compromising on electrical performance. Here, we introduce a solution-processed biodegradable polymer blend consisting of a diketopyrrolopyrrole-based semiconducting polymer (DPP2T) and different mixtures of two biodegradable polymers, polycaprolactone (PCL) and polylactic acid (PLA). We find that controlling the ratio of components enables a reduction in semiconductor polymer loading (∼70:80% reduction) while maintaining or improving field-effect transistor performance.

In organic field-effect transistors (OFETs), the high carrier mobility of conjugated polymers (CPs) is significantly influenced by the maintenance of excellent coplanarity and aggregation, especially at the interface between the organic semiconductor and dielectric layer. Unfortunately, CPs typically exhibit poor coplanarity due to the single bond rotations between donor and acceptor units. Furthermore, there is relatively little research on the coplanarity of CPs at the interface.

Organic photoelectrochemical transistor based on titanium dioxide nanorods for detection of Microcystin-LR.

Talanta

December 2024

Key Laboratory of Optic-electric Sensing and Analytical Chemistry for Life Science, MOE, College of Chemistry and Molecular Engineering, Qingdao University of Science and Technology, Qingdao, 266042, China. Electronic address:

A more efficient signal amplification strategy is needed to improve the performance of promising photoelectrochemical sensors (PEC). Organic photoelectrochemical transistor (OPECT) sensors are of growing interest in many fields, but their potential has not yet been widely exploited and remains a challenge. In this study, a novel organic photoelectrochemical transistor aptamer (OPECT) biosensor combining photoelectrochemical analysis and organic electrochemical transistor with AgI-TiO (AgI-TNs) as photoreactive material and target-specific DNA chain reaction hybridization as signal amplifier for microcystin-LR detection was developed.
