Malaria, caused by Plasmodium falciparum, remains a significant health burden. One major barrier for developing antimalarial drugs is the ability of the parasite to rapidly generate resistance. We previously demonstrated that salinipostin A (SalA), a natural product, potently kills parasites by inhibiting multiple lipid metabolizing serine hydrolases, a mechanism that results in a low propensity for resistance. Given the difficulty of employing natural products as therapeutic agents, we synthesized a small library of lipidic mixed alkyl/aryl phosphonates as bioisosteres of SalA. Two constitutional isomers exhibited divergent antiparasitic potencies that enabled the identification of therapeutically relevant targets. The active compound kills parasites through a mechanism that is distinct from both SalA and the pan-lipase inhibitor orlistat and shows synergistic killing with orlistat. Our compound induces only weak resistance, attributable to mutations in a single protein involved in multidrug resistance. These data suggest that mixed alkyl/aryl phosphonates are promising, synthetically tractable antimalarials.

One-component epoxy resins (OCERs) with improved stability (shelf life) and controlled curing temperatures were prepared using epoxy resins and polyoxazoline-imidazole (POZ-Im) based thermal latent curing agents (TLCs). POZ homopolymers with molar masses of 1000, 2000, and 5000 g/mol were obtained via cationic ring-opening polymerization (CROP) of 2-ethyl-2-oxazoline, 2-propyl-2-oxazoline, 2-pentyl-2-oxazoline, and 2-phenyl-2-oxazoline. TLCs were prepared by physically entrapping imidazole, the curing agent, in the POZ matrix at the homopolymer/Im (HP/Im) ratios of 1:1 and 5:1 and characterized by FTIR and TGA.

Device-level implementation of soft materials for energy conversion and thermal management demands a comprehensive understanding of their thermal conductivity and elastic modulus to mitigate thermo-mechanical challenges and ensure long-term stability. Thermal conductivity and elastic modulus are usually positively correlated in soft materials, such as amorphous macromolecules, which poses a challenge to discover materials that are either soft and thermally conductive or hard and thermally insulative. Here, we show anomalous correlations of thermal conductivity and elastic modulus in two-dimensional (2D) hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites (HOIP) by engineering the molecular interactions between organic cations.

In search of new possible uses of cheap lignite from the Kosova Bassin, the surface of lignite powders is modified with alkyl or mixed alkyl-aryl layers. Modification is performed in aqueous acid solution containing an aryl diazonium salt and an alkyl halide compound in millimolar concentration, in the presence of potassium iodide as a reducing agent at equimolar concentration. Attachment of alkyl films substituted with carboxylic groups and aryl films with nitro or bis-trifluoromethyl groups is characterized by IRATR and XPS spectroscopy.
