Tanshinone, a lipophilic component of Salvia miltiorrhiza, is used to treat diseases like atherosclerosis, hypertension, Alzheimer's disease, and diabetes mellitus through its pharmacological activities like anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, and anti-tumor. Excessive inflammation is the primary cause of bone diseases such as osteoporosis and rheumatoid arthritis, affecting more than millions of people across the globe. Recently, tanshinone has shown potential benefits against bone diseases by modulating signaling pathways accountable for the proliferation and differentiation of bone cells. In vitro and in vivo studies reported that tanshinone promotes osteoblast formation and mineralization and suppresses excessive bone resorption during disease conditions. In this review, we have summarized the beneficial effects of tanshinone and other extracts of Salvia miltiorrhiza for bone health and their potential molecular targets in signaling.

Tanshinone IIA (Tan IIA) is a lipophilic active constituent derived from the rhizomes and roots of (Danshen), a common Chinese medicinal herb. However, clinical applications of Tan IIA are limited due to its poor solubility in water. : To overcome this limitation, we developed a calcium alginate hydrogel (CA) as a hydrophilic carrier for Tan IIA, which significantly improved its solubility.

Tanshinones, biologically active diterpene compounds derived from , interact with specific proteins and DNA sequences, influencing signaling pathways in animals and humans. This study highlights tanshinone-protein interactions observed at concentrations achievable in vivo, ensuring greater physiological relevance compared to in vitro studies that often employ supraphysiological ligand levels. Experimental data suggest that while tanshinones interact with multiple proteomic targets, only a few enzymes are significantly affected at biologically relevant concentrations.

Developing a novel and potent adjuvant with excellent biocompatibility for immune response augmentation is crucial for enhancing vaccine efficacy. Here, we prepared a stable PLGA nanoparticle by encapsulating MnCl/Salvia miltiorrhiza polysaccharide (MS-PLGA) and employed it as an adjuvant in the model antigen OVA (MS-PLGA-OVA) to elicit potent immunity. The biological experiments indicated that the MS-PLGA-OVA could effectively recruit APCs to the injection site and provoke long-term antibodies.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common chronic liver disease, but effective therapeutic drugs are still lacking. Dihydrotanshinone I (DHTS), a natural product isolated from Salvia miltiorrhiza, has been shown to have ameliorative effects on NAFLD. The aim of this study was to investigate the hepatoprotective effect of DHTS on NAFLD and its mechanism.

Hair loss is one of the skin conditions that can affect people's mental health. Plant raw material extracts are of great interest due to their safety. In this study, we utilize reverse network pharmacology to screen for key targets of the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway and the TGFβ/BMP signaling pathway, as well as key differential lipids, for plant raw materials selection.
