AI Article Synopsis

  • - Closed-space hand infections, like septic arthritis of the wrist, require urgent attention to prevent serious health issues, and are less common than infections in larger joints.
  • - A case study details a 64-year-old woman with rheumatoid arthritis who developed septic arthritis in her wrist, leading to abscess formation and infection spread to her midpalmar region.
  • - Treatment involved surgical intervention to drain the abscess and remove infected tissue, highlighting the importance of prompt management for such rare but potentially debilitating conditions.

Article Abstract

Closed-space hand infections are considered an emergency requiring prompt management to avoid debilitating consequences and potential morbidity. Septic arthritis of the wrist is particularly uncommon in comparison to the large joints that are usually affected. We report a case of a 64-year-old female with known rheumatoid arthritis and neuropathic wrist, with superimposed septic arthritis of the wrist, complicated by abscess formation. Ultrasound and Magnetic resonance imaging revealed spread of infection to the midpalmar region and the space of Parona. Although collections in this space are extremely rare, if left untreated, they may lead to permanent disability. Incision and drainage of the abscess along with synovectomy of the affected wrist joint was performed. was the causative organism, despite the fact that Non-gonococcal and Staphylococcus aureus bacteria are the main causative agents of septic arthritis in adults.

A wide variety of degenerative, inflammatory and infective arthropathies with overlapping clinical features can involve the knee joint. Due to its excellent soft tissue contrast resolution and multiplanar capability, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) plays a significant role in early and accurate diagnosis of various arthropathies. In this article, we have provided a brief review of MRI features of various arthropathies involving the knee joint.

Background And Purpose: Clinical manifestations of Lyme borreliosis (LB), caused by Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (Bbsl), include erythema migrans, Lyme neuroborreliosis (LNB), carditis, and arthritis. LB is a notifiable disease in Japan with <30 surveillance-reported LB cases annually, predominately from Hokkaido Prefecture. However, LB, including LNB, may be under-diagnosed in Japan since diagnostic tests are not readily available.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a systemic, chronic autoimmune disease. Many studies have shown that microorganisms may be an important pathological factor leading to the onset of RA. Some infectious or non-infectious pathogenic microorganisms and their metabolites may be the initiating factors of the early onset of RA.
