Alzheimers Dement

December 2024

University of Maryland School of Public Health, College Park, MD, USA.

Background: Escalating drug costs are likely to disproportionately burden individuals with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) as they often have multiple chronic conditions (MCC). This study aimed to estimate the incremental total and out-of-pocket (OOP) drug costs associated with ADRD and MCC across the drug cost distributions.

Method: The study used a nationally representative cross-sectional dataset from 2003 to 2021 Medical Expenditure Panel Survey.

Alzheimers Dement

December 2024

Alzheimer's Disease & Brain Health, Eisai Inc., Nutley, NJ, USA.

Background: This study describes the total healthcare costs integrating direct, indirect, and intangible or emotional cost components across the severity stages of Alzheimer's disease (AD) in US.

Method: Utilizing Health and Retirement Study (HRS) data (1994-2018), a bi-annual US national survey of older adults, we assessed out-of-pocket and indirect costs, including unpaid caregiving services, missed workdays, and early retirement. HRS, analyzed with sampling weights, provided a representative US national sample.

Background: In Brazil, the dementia landscape is projected to intensify significantly, with the number of people living with dementia expected to more than triple by 2050. This anticipated surge underscores the urgency for health and social systems to strategize and prepare adequately. However, studies about costs related to dementia are very scarce in Brazil, making it difficult to understand better the financial impacts of the syndrome.

Background: Paralytic ileus and intestinal obstruction (PIAIO) pose significant public health concerns, given the notable scarcity of current research on their disease burden and trends. This study evaluated the global burden of PIAIO from 1990 to 2021 and forecastsed their future burden over the next decade.

Methods: Using the latest data from Global Burden of Disease Study (GBD) 2021, we obtained the prevalence, incidence, mortality and disability adjusted life years (DALYs) data for these conditions, along with their corresponding age-standardized rate (ASR) indicators.

Alzheimers Dement

December 2024

Huashan Hospital, Fudan University, Shanghai, Shanghai, China.

Background: The pathophysiological evolutions involved in early-stage Alzheimer's disease (AD) are not well understood.

Methods: We used data of 2,923 plasma proteins from 51,296 non-demented middle-aged adults in the UK Biobank with 15 years of follow-up. We first identified AD-associated proteins using Cox proportional hazard models and then delineated their temporal sequences to characterize the pathophysiological evolution.
