Pasteurella canis/oralis: A Tale of the Immunocompromised.

Bacteria from the  genus are small Gram-negative coccobacilli. They are commonly found in the oral cavity, gastrointestinal tract, and upper respiratory tract of domestic pets. When humans experience trauma such as scratches, bites, or direct wound licking from an animal, this could result in skin or soft tissue infections. The purpose of this case report is to highlight that immunocompromised individuals are at greater risk of overwhelming sepsis and infections with the  species. Moreover, it reemphasizes the importance of comprehensive questioning regarding exposures to any wild or domesticated animals as infectious sources in the setting of overwhelming sepsis in the immunocompromised.

Trauma-induced coagulopathy (TIC) is characterized by dynamic changes in fibrinolysis, which can significantly impact patient outcomes. These changes typically manifest in two phases: hyperfibrinolysis followed by fibrinolysis suppression. In the early stages of TIC, there is often an overwhelming release of tissue plasminogen activator, which leads to excessive fibrinolysis.

Dual alarmin-receptor-specific targeting peptide systems for treatment of sepsis.

Acta Pharm Sin B

December 2024

Department of Molecular and Life Science, Hanyang University, Ansan 15588, Republic of Korea.

The pathophysiology of sepsis is characterized by a systemic inflammatory response to infection; however, the cytokine blockade that targets a specific early inflammatory mediator, such as tumor necrosis factor, has shown disappointing results in clinical trials. During sepsis, excessive endotoxins are internalized into the cytoplasm of immune cells, resulting in dysregulated pyroptotic cell death, which induces the leakage of late mediator alarmins such as HMGB1 and PTX3. As late mediators of lethal sepsis, overwhelming amounts of alarmins bind to high-affinity TLR4/MD2 and low-affinity RAGE receptors, thereby amplifying inflammation during early-stage sepsis.

Leukemia symptoms occurring in the first 4 weeks of infancy are known as congenital leukemia. We present a case of congenital leukemia in a full-term neonate manifesting at birth with a grossly distended abdomen due to a large abdominal mass. Ultrasonography of the abdomen showed a large abdominal mass originating from the liver.

Background: Splenectomy is frequently performed in transfusion-dependent thalassemia (TDT) patients to lower blood transfusion needs but is associated with significant long-term complications, including sepsis, thrombosis, and pulmonary hypertension. This study examines the long-term complications, survival rates, and causes of mortality among adult patients with TDT who have undergone splenectomy in a low and middle-income country (LMIC).

Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 103 adult TDT patients (≥18 years) who underwent splenectomy between July 2013 and March 2024.

Introduction: Spontaneous rupture of the pathological malarial spleen (SRPMS) is a rare condition with a mortality rate among travelers of approximately 38 %, whereas it was around 10 % for local citizens. The mortality rate for overwhelming post-splenectomy sepsis was reported to be about 50 %.

Methods: A retrospective study was conducted from febraury2022 to July 2022.
