The perpendicular gyroscope: modal analysis of plate, beam and gyroscope multistructures.

Philos Trans A Math Phys Eng Sci

Published: September 2024

This paper presents a study of the perpendicular gyroscope, which is formed of two orthogonal beams, a flexural plate and a gyroscope. Two sets of chiral-torsional boundary conditions are derived to analytically model the dynamic effects of the gyroscope while taking into account the broken symmetries of the system. The perpendicular junction causes the coupling of the compressional, flexural and torsional displacements in the system. This complex behaviour is accounted for with a comprehensive set of kinematic and dynamic junction conditions. Modal analysis demonstrates the fully coupled system and reveals how the spinning gyroscope induces dynamic chiral Chladni patterns in the plate. This article is part of the theme issue 'Current developments in elastic and acoustic metamaterials science (Part 2)'.

A Customized Extended Kalman Filter for Removing the Impact of the Magnetometer's Measurements on Inclination Determination.

Normally, a three-dimensional orientation determination algorithm that is used in a magnetic and inertial measurement unit calculates the inclination (including both the pitch and roll) of rigid bodies by fusing the measurements of the gyroscope, as well as the measurements of both the accelerometer and the magnetometer. The measurements of the magnetometer can be helpful in improving the inclination estimation accuracy; however, once the measurements of the magnetometer are disturbed by ferromagnetic materials, the inclination estimation accuracy could be significantly decreased. Hence, a better approach should be followed in terms of not employing the measurements of the magnetometer for inclination determination.

Vibrating Flexoelectric Micro-Beams as Angular Rate Sensors.

Micromachines (Basel)

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Lincoln, NE 68588-0526, USA.

We studied flexoelectrically excited/detected bending vibrations in perpendicular directions of a micro-beam spinning about its axis. A set of one-dimensional equations was derived and used in a theoretical analysis. It is shown that the Coriolis effect associated with the spin produces an electrical output proportional to the angular rate of the spin when it is small.

Spin revolution breaks time reversal symmetry of rolling magnets.

Sci Rep

Physics Department, University of Hamburg, Jungiusstr 11, 20355, Hamburg, Germany.

The classical laws of physics are usually invariant under time reversal. Here, we reveal a novel class of magnetomechanical effects rigorously breaking time-reversal symmetry. These effects are based on the mechanical rotation of a hard magnet around its magnetization axis in the presence of friction and an external magnetic field, which we call spin revolution.

A problem of estimating the movement and orientation of a mobile robot is examined in this paper. The strapdown inertial navigation systems are often engaged to solve this common obstacle. The most important and critically sensitive component of such positioning approximation system is a gyroscope.
