Our understanding of the use of acid-suppressant drugs (ASDs) in companion animals is largely centered around the treatment of acid-related disorders including gastroesophageal reflux and gastrointestinal ulceration. The companion article by Grady et al, JAVMA, October 2024, summarizes our current knowledge of the efficacy of and indications for ASDs for the treatment of acid-related disorders. Far less is understood about both the benefits of and potential for adverse effects of ASDs outside of the parietal cell including those directed toward inflammation and immunomodulation, tumorigenesis, fibrosis, and oxidative stress. In this Currents in One Health article, we summarize the pH-independent properties of ASDs as demonstrated in studies conducted largely in humans and rodents. The objective of this review is to highlight and increase awareness of the pH-independent effects of ASDs to elucidate the need for further veterinary research in this area.

The interest in chemical interactions between inorganic sulfur species and heme compounds has grown significantly in recent years due to their physiological relevance. The model system ferric N-acetyl microperoxidase 11 (NAcMP11Fe) enables the exploration of the mechanistic aspects of the interaction between the ferric heme group and binding sulfur ligands, without the constraints imposed by a protein matrix and the stabilizing effects of distal amino acids. In this study, we investigated the coordination of disulfane (HSSH) and its conjugate base hydrodisulfide (HSS) to NAcMP11Fe.

Bigels in which the cationic polymer -chitosan- is combined with an anionic polymer -karaya gum, pectin or xanthan gum- were prepared. These polymers, thanks to the attraction of their charged surface groups, are liable to form a polyelectrolyte complex that would modify the characteristics of the bigel. The obtained bigels were subsequently freeze-dried and tested to study their behavior against different conditions occurring in the vaginal environment.

Eight sulfonamide (SA) antibiotics were effectively degraded using a UV/HO process in a quasi-collimated beam apparatus, utilizing optimized fluence quantification. Fluence-based rate constants (kk') for the UV/HO process were established. A curve-fitting method, derived from R modeling, was developed for the UV/HO process to quantitatively assess the impact of critical factors, including water quality and direct UV photolysis.

The pH dependence of the free energy level of the flash-induced primary charge pair PI was determined by a combination of the results from the indirect charge recombination of PQ and from the delayed fluorescence of the excited dimer (P*) in the reaction center of the photosynthetic bacterium , where the native ubiquinone at the primary quinone binding site Q was replaced by low-potential anthraquinone (AQ) derivatives. The following observations were made: (1) The free energy state of PI was pH independent below pH 10 (-370 ± 10 meV relative to that of the excited dimer P*) and showed a remarkable decrease (about 20 meV/pH unit) above pH 10. A part of the dielectric relaxation of the PI charge pair that is not insignificant (about 120 meV) should come from protonation-related changes.

Bariatric surgery introduces significant changes in the gastrointestinal tract, which may affect oral drug absorption/bioavailability. Here we investigate the phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitor (PDE5i) tadalafil for potentially impaired post-bariatric solubility/dissolution and absorption.
