In Chile, limited information is available on colorants in commonly consumed foods among vulnerable age groups. We developed and validated a rapid HPLC-DAD method to simultaneously evaluate 11 synthetic colorants in candies, beverages, ice cream, and cereals. The method exhibited excellent analytical performance for all 11 colorants with LOD (0.44 - 1.55 mgL), LOQ v(1.32 - 4.70 mgL), precision (4.0 and 7.3% RSD), and recovery (80 - 105%) in fortified matrices (10-50-100 mgL). The highest detection frequencies were as follows: cereals > candies > beverages > ice cream. Sunset Yellow was the most prevalent colorant in all food matrices, followed by Allura Red and Azorubine. Positive samples contained between 1 and 5 synthetic colorants. With the exception of cereals, the colorant concentrations in the remaining matrices exceeded the Codex Alimentarius regulations and the values reported in other studies worldwide, indicating the Chilean population is at risk.

Color-tunable white organic light-emitting diodes (CT-WOLEDs) have attracted widespread attention given their large color variation to meet the different daily scenarios from the perspective of circadian rhythm. However, most reported CT-WOLEDs, especially the tri-color devices, exhibit poor performances and sophisticated structures. Here, a simple structure tri-color CT-WOLED is demonstrated that simultaneously exhibits high efficiency, ultralong operation lifetime, and wide color-tunable range for dynamic sunlight emulation.

Controlled Introduction of sp3 Quantum Defects in Fluorescent Carbon Nanotubes by Mechanochemistry.

Precise control over low-dimensional materials holds an immense potential for their applications in sensing, imaging and information processing. The controlled introduction of sp3 quantum defects (color centers) can be used to tailor the optoelectronic properties of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) in the tissue transparency (> 800 nm) and the telecommunication window. However, an uncontrolled functionalization of SWCNTs with defects leads to a loss of the NIR fluorescence.

Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, Northwestern University, 2145 Sheridan Road, Evanston, Illinois 60208, United States.

There is growing concern around the negative health impacts associated with contamination of drinking water by harmful chemicals. Technology that enables fast, cheap, and easy detection of ions and small molecules in drinking water is thus important for reducing the incidence of these negative health impacts. Here, we describe a sensor for detecting Cu in water that provides colorimetric results in 15 min or less and functions in a just-add-water format.

The large-scale mining and utilization of rare earth elements have significantly increased their concentration in the environment, especially in regions surrounding mining areas. These environmentally-enriched rare earth elements accumulate in agricultural products and organisms through soil and water, potentially impacting in human health through the food chain. Erbium (Er), a rare earth element of the lanthanide series (Group IIIB), plays a crucial role in various modern technological applications.

A dual-mode biosensor for microRNA detection based on DNA tetrahedron-gated nanochannels.

A biosensor based on solid-state nanochannels of anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) membrane for both electrochemical and naked-eye detection of microRNA-31 (MiR-31) is proposed. For this purpose, MoS nanosheets, which possess different adsorption capabilities to single-stranded and double-stranded nucleic acids, are deposited onto the top surface of the AAO membrane. Moreover, multi-functional DNA nanostructure have been designed by linking a G-rich sequence for folding to a G-quadruplex at three vertices and a complementary sequence of MiR-31 at the other one vertex of a DNA tetrahedron.
