Understanding the spatiotemporal organization of components within living systems requires the highest resolution possible. Microscopy approaches that allow for a resolution below 250 nm include electron and super-resolution microscopy (SRM). The latter combines advanced imaging techniques and the optimization of image processing methods.

Gel immersion in endoscopy: Exploring potential applications.

World J Gastroenterol

January 2025

Department of Internal Medicine, Asahikawa Medical University, Asahikawa 078-8510, Hokkaido, Japan.

The challenge of effectively eliminating air during gastrointestinal endoscopy using ultrasound techniques is apparent. This difficulty arises from the intricacies of removing concealed air within the folds of the gastrointestinal tract, resulting in artifacts and compromised visualization. In addition, the overlap of folds with lesions can obscure their depth and size, presenting challenges for an accurate assessment.

Building blocks for nanophotonic devices and metamaterials.

Chem Commun (Camb)

January 2025

Wyant College of Optical Sciences, University of Arizona, 1630 E University Blvd, Tucson, AZ, USA.

Nanophotonic devices control and manipulate light at the nanometer scale. Applications include biological imaging, integrated photonic circuits, and metamaterials. The design of these devices requires the accurate modeling of light-matter interactions at the nanoscale and the optimization of multiple design parameters, both of which can be computationally demanding and time intensive.

Background: High-throughput behavioral analysis is important for drug discovery, toxicological studies, and the modeling of neurological disorders such as autism and epilepsy. Zebrafish embryos and larvae are ideal for such applications because they are spawned in large clutches, develop rapidly, feature a relatively simple nervous system, and have orthologs to many human disease genes. However, existing software for video-based behavioral analysis can be incompatible with recordings that contain dynamic backgrounds or foreign objects, lack support for multiwell formats, require expensive hardware, and/or demand considerable programming expertise.

Programmed cell death (PCD) is a significant factor in the progression of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and might serve as a crucial marker for predicting HCC prognosis and therapy response. However, the classification of HCC based on diverse PCD patterns requires further investigation. This study identified a novel molecular classification named PCD subtype (C1, C2, and C3) based on the genes associated with 19 PCD patterns, distinguished by clinical, biological functional pathways, mutations, immune characteristics, and drug sensitivity.
