Published: January 2025

Electron energy loss spectra collected from fresh and corroded silver nanoparticles are compared with those from a number of reference materials, focusing on the M edge. Chemical shifts and changes in the energy loss near edge structure (ELNES) are described and found to be sufficient to distinguish metallic silver from chemically oxidised silver. The measurements, in conjunction with electron energy loss spectrum imaging, are used to assess the mechanisms for atmospheric corrosion of silver nanoparticles. We unambiguously assign the corrosion product under atmospheric conditions to be silver sulphide, but show the reaction process to be distinctly inhomogeneous, producing a variety of types of corroded particles. LAY DESCRIPTION: >Here, we use analytical electron microscopy to track the corrosion of silver nanoparticles and present chemical maps of the corrosion products. We show clear spectroscopic differences between metallic and corroded silver using the M electron energy loss spectral feature, which is not commonly studied. Our study shows that corrosion is due to interactions with sulphur in the atmosphere; and the corrosion is not uniform, but appears to develop from specific points on the surface of the nanoparticles.

Background: Fibromyalgia Syndrome (FMS) is a chronic disabling musculoskeletal condition of unknown aetiology characterized by generalized musculoskeletal pain, extreme fatigue, mood disturbance, impaired cognition, and lack of refreshing sleep. Middle East pain syndrome (MEPS) is a newly described pollution-induced syndrome of hyperparathyroidism and fibromyalgia mimicking rheumatoid arthritis, characterized by the radiological presence of spur-like excrescences in terminal phalanges. This study aimed to explore the inflammatory nature of Middle East pain and Fibromyalgia syndromes.

Background: Dialysis recovery time (DRT) refers to the period during which fatigue and weakness subside following hemodialysis treatment, allowing patients to resume their daily routines. This study aimed to identify the factors influencing DRT in hemodialysis patients in Turkey and Portugal, where the prevalence of chronic kidney disease is notably high.

Methods: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted in a private dialysis center in Turkey and three dialysis centers in Portugal.

Evaluation of fatigue performance of asphalt materials based on their relaxation behavior.

Sci Rep

Shanxi Province Land Engineering Construction Group Co., Ltd, Xian, 710075, China.

Although the fatigue properties of asphalt materials have been extensively studied, the relationship between the rheological properties and road performance of asphalt mixtures remains underexplored. In this study, we have examined the relaxation properties of asphalt binders through relaxation tests conducted on asphalt and its mastic under different conditions. A repeated stress relaxation-recovery test is designed for assessing both the relaxation and elastic properties, and a set of reasonable test parameters is recommended, thereby establishing a novel test method for measuring the relaxation and elastic behaviors of asphalt.

Long COVID (LC) is a complex multisymptom condition with no known disease-modifying treatments. This wait-list-controlled open-label trial tested whether a remotely delivered structured weight management program could improve respective LC symptoms in people living with overweight. Adults with LC (symptoms >12 weeks) and body mass index >27 kg m (>25 kg m for South Asians) were randomized (n = 234, 1:1) to control (n = 116, usual care) or the remotely delivered structured weight management (n = 118, total diet replacement (850 kcal per day) for 12 weeks, followed by food reintroduction and weight loss maintenance support) via minimization and randomization (80:20) to balance dominant LC symptom, sex, age, ethnicity and postcode-based index of multiple deprivation between groups.

Wind energy assessment and hybrid micro-grid optimization for selected regions of Saudi Arabia.

Sci Rep

Department of Theoretical Electrical Engineering and Diagnostics of Electrical Equipment, Institute of Electrodynamics, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Beresteyskiy, 56, Kyiv-57, Kyiv, 03680, Ukraine.

This study investigates the optimization of wind energy integration in hybrid micro grids (MGs) to address the rising demand for renewable energy, particularly in regions with limited wind potential. A comprehensive assessment of wind energy potential was conducted, and optimal sizing of standalone MGs incorporating photovoltaic (PV) systems, wind turbines (WT), and battery storage (BS) systems was performed for six regions in the Kingdom Saudi Arabia. Wind resource analysis utilizing the Weibull distribution function shows that all regions exhibited Class 1 wind energy characteristics, with average annual wind power densities ranging from 36.
