Objectives: To overcome the limitations of traditional diagnosis of orbicularis oris muscle function in mouth-breathing patients, this study aims to propose a surface electromyographic (sEMG) based method for reliable and accurate quantitative assessment of lip closure ability.

Methods: A total of 21 volunteers (16 patients and 5 healthy subjects, aged 8-16) were included in the study. Three nonlinear onset detection algorithms - Teager-Kaiser Energy (TKE) operator, Sample Entropy (SampEn), and Fuzzy Entropy (FuzzyEn) - were compared for their ability to identify lip closure in sEMG signals. Lip Closure EMG Activity Index (LCEAI) was proposed based on the action segments detected by the best performing algorithm for the quantitative assessment of lip closure.

Results: The results indicated that FuzzyEn had the highest lip closure identification rate at 93.78 %, the lowest average onset delay of 47.50 ms, the lowest average endpoint delay of 73.10 ms, and the minimal time error of 111.61 ms, exhibiting superior performance. The calculation results of the LCEAI closely corresponded with the actual degree of lip closure in patients.

Conclusions: The lip closure ability assessment method proposed in this study can provide a quantitative basis for the diagnosis of mouth breathing.

The purpose of this study was to quantitatively assess the alveolar bone support of teeth adjacent to the cleft site in individuals with nonsyndromic cleft lip and palate (CLP) who have undergone either orthodontic space closure or space opening for missing lateral incisors. A cross-sectional retrospective study. University orthodontic clinic serving individuals with CLP.

Identifying New Susceptibility Genes of Non-Syndromic Orofacial Cleft Based on Syndromes Accompanied With Craniosynostosis.

Objectives: Orofacial cleft (OC) can be classified into syndromic orofacial cleft (SOC) and non-syndromic orofacial cleft (NSOC), depending on whether there are other congenital deformities. Craniosynostosis, the premature closure of cranial sutures, is a common phenotype of SOC resulting in abnormal ossification of skull and brain development disorders. Its correlation with OC offers a promising approach to identify susceptibility genes for NSOC by examining causative genes of SOCs with craniosynostosis.

Maternal exposures are known to influence the risk of isolated cleft lip with or without cleft palate (CL/P) - a common and highly heritable birth defect with a multifactorial etiology. To identify new CL/P risk loci, we conducted a genome-wide gene-environment interaction (GEI) analysis of CL/P on a sample of 540 cases and 260 controls recruited from the Philippines, incorporating the interaction effects of genetic variants with maternal smoking and vitamin use. As GEI analyses are typically low in power and the results can be difficult to interpret, we used multiple testing frameworks to evaluate potential GEI effects: 1 degree-of-freedom (1df) GxE test, the 3df joint test, and the two-step EDGE approach.

This case report describes a complex full-step asymmetrical Class II division 1 high-angle in an adult patient treated by extraction of compromised first molars with a preadjusted lingual appliance. Since the patient presented severe sagittal and vertical discrepancies combined with an Izard orthofrontal profile with upper lip protrusion, an extraction camouflage was performed with the twofold aim of obtaining ideal occlusal relationship and profile improvement, correcting occlusal plane cant by selective intrusion with interradicular miniscrews. Appropriate biomechanical strategies, including extraction choice and anchorage control during space closure, were needed to achieve the planned results.
