Xylene separation is crucial but challenging, especially for the preferential separation of the intermediate-size m-xylene from xylene mixtures. Herein, exploiting the differences in molecular length and alkyl distribution among xylenes, we present a length-matched metal-organic framework, formulated as Al(OH)[OC-CHO-CO], featuring an effective pore size corresponding to m-xylene molecular length combined with multiple negative O hydrogen bond donors distribution, can serve as a molecular trap for efficient preferential separation of the intermediate-size m-xylene. Benchmark separation performance was achieved for separating m-xylene from a ternary mixture of m-xylene/o-xylene/p-xylene, with simultaneous record-high m-xylene uptake (1.3 mmol g) and m-xylene/p-xylene selectivity (5.3) in the liquid-phase competitive adsorption. Both vapor- and liquid-phase fixed-bed tests confirmed its practical separation capability with benchmark dynamic m-xylene/p-xylene and m-xylene/o-xylene selectivities, as well as excellent regenerability. The selective and strong m-xylene binding affinity among xylene molecules was further elucidated by simulations, validating the effectiveness of such a pore environment for the separation of intermediate-size molecules.

Quantifying trace levels of microplastics in complex environmental media remains a challenge. In this study, an approach combining field collection of samples from different depths, sample size fractionation, and plastic quantification via pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (Py-GC-MS) was employed to identify and quantify microplastics at two public beaches along the northeast coast of the U.S.

The COVID19 infection is known to disseminate through droplets ejected by infected individuals during coughing, sneezing, speaking, and breathing. The spread of the infection and hence its menace depend on how the virus-loaded droplets evolve in space and time with changing environmental conditions. In view of this, we investigate the evolution of the droplets within the purview of the Brownian motion of the evaporating droplets in the air with varying weather conditions under the action of gravity.

Here, a novel strategy is presented, cooperatively (thermodynamically and kinetically) controlled crystallization for the highly selective separation of intermediate-size anionic pollutants from their analogs in water through one-pot construction of cationic metal-organic frameworks (CMOFs) with higher stabilities and faster crystallization, which are based on the target anions as charge-balancing anions. 4,4'-azo-triazole and Cu are chosen as suitable ligand and metal ion for CMOF construction because they can form stronger intermolecular interaction with -toluenesulfonate anion (Ts-) compared to its analogs.

The fundamental relationships are derived for the retention, peak width, and peak capacity of non-retained polymers eluting from multiple standard size-exclusion chromatography (SEC) columns connected in series. The standard SEC columns may have different dimensions and are packed with particles having distinct average particle diameters (APDs) and average mesopore sizes (AMSs). The performances (peak capacity, local resolution power, and sensitivity) of three standard SEC columns connected in series (called a tri-SEC column) packed with bridged-ethylene-hybrid (BEH) fully porous particles (FPPs) having three different APDs (1.
