Face-to-face meetings on a conference table are a frequent form of communication. The short-range exposure risk of aerosol disease transmission is high in the scenario of susceptible facing the infectious person over the table. We propose a mitigation methodology using the air curtain to reduce direct exposure to virus-laden aerosols. A numerical model was validated with experimental data to simulate the dispersion of aerosols. A dynamic mesh was adopted to consider the head movement of a 3D thermal manikin model. Results show that nodding head increase the potential risk by 74 % compared to motionless. Subsequently, for a single air curtain, placing it in the middle of the table is more effective in preventing risks than on the sides. For double air curtains, increasing the distance between them has a greater risk reduction effect than a shorter distance. Increasing the air velocity or width is more effective than increasing the number of air curtains. A moderate velocity (1 m s) works well to reduce the risk of nasal breathing. A higher velocity (2 m s) is needed for the coughing scenario. For similar indoor environments, the air curtains on the table can offer active precautions without changing the current ventilation system.

During tunnel construction, the protracted mucking phase poses significant occupational health risks, particularly from dust exposure. This study delves into comprehensive numerical simulations to examine the spatiotemporal dynamics of dust particles during the mucking process. A distinct 'bimodal pattern' was characterized by higher concentrations in the mucking area (0-30 m) and the inverted arch area (60-110 m), where concentrations exceed 30 mg/m3 under all conditions.

Article Synopsis
  • The coal-breaking operation in underground mines generates substantial dust, negatively impacting air quality at the tunneling face, which poses risks for workers.
  • This study investigates a pneumatic vortex fog curtain dust control system and its effectiveness in trapping respiratory dust, revealing a significant reduction in dust concentration to 2.5 mg/m under various conditions.
  • The system shows that even with increased wind speed from auxiliary ventilation, it maintains effective dust suppression without compromising its performance, leading to improved safety and working conditions for miners.

Advancing characterization of VOC diffusion in indoor fabrics: A dual-porosity modeling approach.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are major chemical pollutants in indoor air. Indoor fabrics, such as curtains, carpets, sofas, and clothes, strongly adsorb VOCs due to their high loading rates and large specific surface areas. The desorption of VOCs from these fabrics can act as a secondary source, worsening indoor air pollution and prolonging its effects.

This study analyzes the influence of air curtain diameter and internal duct structure on the uniformity of an air curtain using Fluent numerical simulation combined with an experimental method after actual measurement of relevant parameters at the construction site, and simulates the best dust insulation parameters of a uniform air curtain. As the diameter of the air curtain supply duct increases and the internal air duct structure is reasonably designed, the axial static pressure of the air curtain generator and the air velocity at the curtain outlet are more uniform, which forms a higher strength of the air curtain. The best dust separation parameter of the uniform air curtain is the vertical downward generated air curtain with an outlet air velocity of 12 m/s and an outlet strip slit width of 80 mm, in which the dust separation efficiency could reach about 79.

Air pollution poses a critical global challenge with severe environmental and human health implications. The associated health risks, including premature mortality, underscore the urgency of effective mitigation strategies. Many studies focus on control strategies without considering specific contaminant types, and there is a notable gap in research on cost-effective, eco-friendly methods, especially in countries facing substantial air pollution challenges.
