The title compound, (CHN)[(CHNO)(MoO)]·4HO, which crystallizes in the monoclinic 2/ space group, was obtained by mixing molybdenum oxide, ethyl-enedi-amine and ethyl-enedi-amine-tetra-acetic acid (Hedta) in a 2:4:1 ratio. The complex anion contains two MoO units bridged by an edta anion. The midpoint of the central C-C bond of the edta anion is located on a crystallographic inversion centre. The independent Mo atom is tridentately coordin-ated by a nitro-gen atom and two carboxyl-ate groups of the edta ligand, together with the three oxo ligands, producing a distorted octa-hedral coordination environment. In the three-dimensional supra-molecular crystal structure, the dinuclear anions, the organo-ammonium counter-ions and the solvent water mol-ecules are linked by N-H⋯O, N-H⋯O and O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds.

Citric acid is more effective than sodium thiosulfate in chelating calcium in a dissolution model of calcinosis.

Sci Rep

Division of Musculoskeletal and Dermatological Sciences, School of Biological Sciences, Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health, The University of Manchester and Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust, Manchester Academic Health Science Centre, Manchester, M13 9PT, UK.

Calcinosis cutis affects 20-40% of patients with systemic sclerosis. This study tests the hypothesis that calcium-chelating polycarboxylic acids can induce calcium dissolution without skin toxicity or irritancy. We compared citric acid (CA) and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) to sodium thiosulfate (STS) for their ability to chelate calcium in vitro using a pharmaceutical dissolution model of calcinosis (hydroxyapatite (HAp) tablet), prior to evaluation of toxicity and irritancy in 2D in vitro skin models.

Purpose: To evaluate the efficacy of micro-computed tomography(Micro-CT) in removing calcium hydroxide from posterior curved root canals.

Methods: Twenty molar teeth (48 root canals) extracted at the Department of General Dentistry, Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital between December 2023 and February 2024 were collected. After preparing by Ni-TI instruments M3 according to standard root canal treatment procedures, calcium hydroxide was injected into the root canals.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on synthesizing and analyzing the structure of a compound featuring imidazolium ions as countercations, based on previously known crystal structures.
  • Various techniques, including thermal stability assessments and spectral analysis, reveal differences in how the pentadentate chelator µ-EDTA interacts with copper centers in two different compounds.
  • The findings highlight the impact of imidazolium ions on the magnetic properties and stability of the structures, supported by DFT calculations showing significant hydrogen bonding and stacking interactions within the trinuclear anion.

Electron Loss and Dissociation Pathways of a Complex Dicarboxylate Dianion: EDTA.

J Phys Chem A

December 2024

Department of Chemistry, Durham University, Durham DH1 3LE, United Kingdom.

Photoelectron imaging of the doubly deprotonated ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid dianion (EDTA) at variable wavelengths indicates two electron loss pathways: direct detachment and thermionic emission from monoanions. The structure of EDTA is also investigated by electronic structure calculations, which indicate that EDTA has two intramolecular hydrogen bonds linking a carboxylate and carboxylic acid group at either end of the molecular backbone. The direct detachment feature in the photoelectron spectrum is very broad and provides evidence for a dissociative photodetachment, where decarboxylation occurs rapidly after electron loss.

Article Synopsis
  • Acidic paddy fields contaminated by cadmium (Cd) pose serious environmental and health challenges, and traditional methods like alkaline stabilizers and manganese (Mn) fertilizers have shown mixed effectiveness in addressing Cd pollution in rice.
  • This study tested a new alkaline stabilizer containing organic matter and silica-calcium alongside various forms of Mn treatment, including soil application and foliar sprays, to determine their effectiveness in reducing Cd accumulation in rice.
  • Results indicated that combining these treatments significantly lowered Cd levels in brown rice, with reductions up to 86.9% in field experiments, while also notably increasing soil pH, suggesting a promising approach for managing Cd contamination in agricultural settings.
