In this study, the biodiversity of Chironomidae was investigated in Palmer Park Pond A, an urban vernal pond in Detroit, Michigan, USA. This study is developed as part of our ongoing Public Environmental Outreach Program at the Detroit Exploration and Nature Center in Palmer Park. Twenty-one Chironomidae species were discovered in and on the adjacent riparian vegetation of this pond using molecular and morphological methods. Three species Namayandeh & Hudson , Namayandeh, Guerra & Ram , and () Namayandeh & Hudson are new to science. and are unusual Orthoclads, with possessing a setose, short, and wide anal point and lacking lanceolate setae on both sexes. Based on the shape of superior volsella, , belongs to the group, which was also confirmed by DNA barcoding molecular analysis. In this study, a new faunistic record was also found for the Nearctic as well as four new faunistic records for the state of Michigan. Ephemeral aquatic habitats such as vernal pools are often overlooked or destroyed by urbanization activities, controlling vector species, creating groomed fields, and/or residential development. Therefore, finding these new species demonstrates the biodiversity value of vernal ponds as important habitats, further motivating us to preserve them.

Purpose: To study the epidemiology and clinical presentation of allergic eye diseases (AEDs) and Vernal Keratoconjunctivitis (VKC).

Methods: A cross-sectional- cum-cohort study was conducted in rural and urban areas in different geographical locations (plains, hilly, high-altitude and coastal) in India. Children (5-15 years) were included, information on exposure to environmental factors gathered, participants screened for AED and VKC on torch light, followed by a comprehensive eye examination.

The Great Salt Lake (Utah, USA) is reducing in size, which raises several ecological concerns, including the effect of an increasing area of dry playa exposed by the retreating lake. This study focuses solely on concerns about the toxicity of metals in the dust blowing off the playa. Although considerable efforts have been made to understand aeolian dust in urban areas along the Wasatch Front, located just east and south of the Great Salt Lake, there is still a need to consolidate existing research and to conduct a compositional analysis of the dust found in these urban areas.

Salt pollution reduces turbidity, dissolved organic matter, and cyanobacteria in experimental vernal pool communities.

Sci Total Environ

June 2024

Department of Biology, Montclair State University, Montclair, NJ 07043, United States of America. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Anthropogenic activities, particularly the excessive use of road deicers, are leading to increased salt concentrations in freshwater systems, disrupting ecosystem functions and resulting in the loss of aquatic life.
  • Experiments show that vernal pools, which can become salt-polluted during snowmelt, are particularly affected, with emerging zooplankton communities being sensitive to even low salt levels.
  • The study found that alternative salts like magnesium and calcium chloride are more toxic than sodium chloride, negatively impacting cyanobacteria abundance and reducing Dissolved Organic Matter (DOM), potentially altering the overall health of these ecosystems.

Investigation of Ozone Formation Chemistry during the Salt Lake Regional Smoke, Ozone, and Aerosol Study (SAMOZA).

ACS Earth Space Chem

School of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, University of Washington Bothell, 18115 Campus Way NE, Bothell, Washington 98011, United States.

Salt Lake City (SLC), UT, is an urban area where ozone (O) concentrations frequently exceed health standards. This study uses an observationally constrained photochemical box model to investigate the drivers of O production during the Salt Lake Regional Smoke, Ozone, and Aerosol Study (SAMOZA), which took place from August to September 2022 in SLC. During SAMOZA, a suite of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), oxides of nitrogen (NO), and other parameters were measured at the Utah Technical Center, a high-NO site in the urban core.
