Introduction: Desmoid tumor (DT) is a rare proliferative disease occurring in connective tissues, characterized by high infiltration and recurrence rates. While surgery remains the primary treatment, its recurrence risk is high, and some extra-abdominal desmoid tumors are inoperable due to their locations. Despite attempts with radiotherapy and systemic therapy, the efficacy remains limited.

Methods: We used low-power cumulative high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) therapy as an initial treatment for desmoid tumor patients either ineligible or unwilling for surgery. Low-power cumulative HIFU employs slower heat accumulation and diffusion, minimizing damage to surrounding tissues while enhancing efficacy.

Results: Fifty-seven non-FAP desmoid tumor patients, previously untreated surgically, underwent low-power cumulative HIFU therapy. Among them, 35 had abdominal wall DT, 20 had extra-abdominal DT, and 2 had intra- abdominal DT, with an 85% median ablation ratio. Abdominal wall DT patients showed significantly better response rates (91.4% vs. 86%) and disease control rates (100% vs. 32%) than that of non-abdominal wall DT patients. Median event- free survival time was not reached after a median follow-up duration of 34 months.

Discussion: With its high response rate, durable efficacy, and mild adverse effects, our findings suggest that low-power cumulative HIFU presents a promising novel treatment for desmoid tumors, particularly abdominal wall DT patients.

Article Synopsis
  • Set-based association analysis helps understand complex diseases by jointly evaluating genetic variants in genome-wide studies, focusing on SNPs (single nucleotide polymorphisms).
  • The study identifies two main models for SNP-disease relationships: one where many variants have small effects (cumulative weak signal) and another where few variants have large effects (dominating strong signal), but existing methods often fall short in power due to model mis-specification and high dimensionality.
  • The proposed approach introduces a high-dimensional inference procedure and a robust testing method that improve the accuracy and power of these analyses, shown to be effective in simulations and real datasets.

We demonstrated the coexistence of memresistance, memcapacitance, and meminductance non-volatile bipolar analog resistive switching in Cu (top electrode)/CuO (active layer)/SS (bottom electrode) memory devices with and without presence of the light. The onset of memcapacitance and meminductance is noticed from the pinched-shaped characteristics in the first and third quadrants. The variation in the scan rate also impacts the coexistence characteristics by shifting the intercept point for low resistance (LRS) and high resistance (HRS) states in positive and negative biasing voltages.

Background And Purpose: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanners are a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions from the healthcare sector, and efforts to improve energy efficiency and reduce energy consumption rely on quantification of the characteristics of energy consumption. The purpose of this work was to develop a semi-automatic analytical methodology for the characterization of the energy consumption of MRI systems using only the load duration curve (LDC). LDCs are a fundamental tool used across various fields to analyze and understand the behavior of loads over time.

This paper presents the integration of a sensing layer over interdigitated electrodes and an electronic circuit on the same flexible printed circuit board. This integration provides an effective technique to use this design as a wearable gas measuring system in a target application, exhibiting high performance, low power consumption, and being lightweight for on-site monitoring. The wearable system proves the concept of using an NFC tag combined with a chemoresistive gas sensor as a cumulative gas sensor, having the possibility of holding the data for a working day, and completely capturing the exposure of a person to NO concentrations.
