Evolutionary emergence of specialised vascular tissues has enabled plants to coordinate their growth and adjust to unfavourable external conditions. Whilst holding a pivotal role in long-distance transport, both xylem and phloem can be encroached on by various biotic factors for systemic invasion and hijacking of nutrients. Therefore, a complete understanding of the strategies deployed by plants against such pathogens to restrict their entry and establishment within plant tissues, is of key importance for the future development of disease-tolerant crops. In this review, we aim to describe how microorganisms exploit the plant vascular system as a route for gaining access and control of different host tissues and metabolic pathways. Highlighting several biological examples, we detail the wide range of host responses triggered to prevent or hinder vascular colonisation and effectively minimise damage upon biotic invasions.

Adverse events and paramedic interventions during extended ground transport in a rural pharmaco-invasive STEMI program.

Emerg Med Australas

February 2025

Orange Health Service, Western NSW Local Health District, Dubbo, New South Wales, Australia.

Objective: Although guidelines recommend angiography and coronary intervention occur within 24 h of thrombolysis when percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is not available within 120 min, this target is difficult to achieve in rural and remote areas of New South Wales (NSW), Australia.

Methods: In this is secondary analysis we examine the impact of extending the existing 90-min road transport limit for patients in rural and remote areas of western NSW who have received initial treatment for ST-elevation myocardial infarction.

Results: The patient cohort consisted of 86 patients who were transported by road ambulance with transport times more than 90 min.

In this work, the regulation of liquid self-transport is achieved through architectural and thermal coupling, transitioning from free surfaces to open channels. Hierarchical structures inspired by the skin of a Texas horned lizard are designed, with the primary structure of wedged grooves and the secondary structure of capillary crura. This design enables advantages including long-distance self-transport, liquid storage and active reflux management on free surfaces, directional transportation, synthesis and detection of reagents in confined spaces, as well as controllable motion and enhanced heat dissipation in open channels.

Background: Biomedical text mining is a technique that extracts essential information from scientific articles using named entity recognition (NER). Traditional NER methods rely on dictionaries, rules, or curated corpora, which may not always be accessible. To overcome these challenges, deep learning (DL) methods have emerged.

Oil fields located in cold environments and deep-sea locations often face challenges with paraffin wax buildup in pipelines during long-distance crude oil transportation. Various strategies have been employed to address this issue, with chemical methods being the most effective and economical. However, traditional chemical inhibitors present problems due to their high toxicity and low biodegradability, leading to increased operational costs and environmental concerns.

KIF1A, a neuron-specific Kinesin-3 motor, is indispensable for long-distance axonal transport and nuclear migration, processes vital for neuronal function. Using MINFLUX tracking, we reveal that KIF1A predominantly adopts a two-heads-bound state, even under ATP-limiting conditions, challenging prior models proposing a one-head-bound rate-limiting step. This two-heads-bound conformation, stabilized by interactions between the positively charged K-loop and negatively charged tubulin tails, enhances microtubule affinity and minimizes detachment.
