  • The feature with NCBI Gene ID 108084518 is identified as an ortholog of a member in the FlyBase High Mobility Group Box Transcription Factors gene group.
  • Five isoforms were created using the GEP F element annotation method, with Sox102F-PNE being the longest and novel isoform based on specific RefSeq prediction and RNA-seq data.
  • The longest isoform, Sox102F-PB, shows a 1.18x expansion in coding span due to the insertion of a transposable element in an intron, and all isoforms share the conserved HMG_box_dom domain.

Article Abstract

The feature with NCBI Gene ID 108084518 was determined to be an ortholog of , a member of the FlyBase High Mobility Group Box Transcription Factors gene group (FBgg0000748). Five isoforms were constructed using the GEP F element annotation protocol, the longest being novel isoform Sox102F-PNE (identified using the XM_017180752 RefSeq prediction and RNA-seq data). Among the isoforms found in both and , Sox102F-PB is the longest and exhibits a 1.18x coding span expansion due to transposable element insertion into an intron. All protein isoforms contain the conserved domain HMG_box_dom (IPR009071).

The feature with Gene ID 108083276 was determined to be an ortholog of absent, small, or homeotic discs 1 ( ). Two isoforms, ash1-PB and ash1-PC, were constructed on the Muller D element using the GEP annotation protocol. The second coding exon of includes an insertion translated into 18 additional amino acids compared to the protein and is supported by RNA-Seq coverage, the lack of splice junction predictions, and multiple gene predictors.

Article Synopsis
  • Scientists studied the size of genes in different Drosophila (fruit fly) species and found big differences, with one fly having about 3 times more genetic material than another.
  • They discovered that a specific part of the gene (the Muller F element) can be much bigger in some species, going from 1.3 Mb to over 18 Mb.
  • The researchers created detailed genetic maps for 4 types of Drosophila with bigger Muller F elements, which will help us understand why some genes are larger and what that means for evolution.

Flow cytometry estimates of genome sizes among species of show a 3-fold variation, ranging from ∼127 Mb in to ∼400 Mb in . However, the assembled portion of the Muller F Element (orthologous to the fourth chromosome in ) shows a nearly 14-fold variation in size, ranging from ∼1.3 Mb to > 18 Mb.

Narrow distribution patterns of tropical Drosophila species are limited by lower resistance to cold or drought. In the invasive tropical Drosophila kikkawai, we tested whether developmental and adult acclimations at cooler temperatures could enhance its stress resistance level. Adult acclimation of winter collected body color morphs revealed a significant increase in the level of cold resistance.
