Surface strain engineering has proven to be an efficient strategy to enhance catalytic properties of platinum (Pt)-based catalysts for electrooxidation reactions. Herein, the S-doped PtMn concave cubes (CNCs) enclosed with high index facets (HIFs) and regulatable surface strain are successfully fabricated by two steps hydrothermal method. The S element with electrophilic property can modify the near-surface of PtMn nanocrystals, altering the electronic structure of Pt to effectively regulate the adsorption/desorption of intermediates in the ethanol electrooxidation reaction (EOR). The PtMnS catalyst with optimal surface strain delivered extraordinary catalytic performance on EOR in acidic media, with a specific activity of 2.88 mA/cm and mass activity of 1.10 mA/μg, which is 4.1 and 2.2 times larger than that of state-of-the-art Pt/C catalyst, respectively. Additionally, the PtMnS catalyst also achieve excellent catalytic properties in alkaline electrolyte for EOR. The results of kinetic studies indicated that the surface strain and modified electronic structure can degrade the activation energy barrier during the process of EOR, which is beneficial for enhance the reaction rate. This work provides a promising approach to construct highly efficient electrocatalysts with tunable surface strain effects for clean energy electro-chemical reactions.

Coherent phase transformations in interstitial solid solutions or intercalation compounds with a miscibility gap are of practical relevance for energy storage materials and specifically for metal hydride or lithium-ion compound nanoparticles. Different conclusions on the size-dependence of the transformation conditions are reached by modeling or theory focusing on the impact of either one (internal, solid-state-) critical-point wetting of the nanoparticle surface or coherency constraints from solute-saturated surface layers. We report a hybrid numerical approach, combining atomistic grand canonical Monte Carlo simulation with a continuum mechanics analysis of coherency stress and modeling simultaneously wetting and mechanical constraints.

Piezoelectric materials directly convert between electrical and mechanical energies. They are used as transducers in applications such as nano-positioning and ultrasound imaging. Improving the properties of these devices requires piezoelectric materials capable of delivering a large longitudinal strain on the application of an electric field.

Fructooligosaccharides (FOS) are a promising choice for cryoprotection of lactic acid bacteria (LAB). However, the mechanism by which this protection takes place is not well understood. Molecular simulation is a key tool for gathering insights into complex physicochemical problems like this.

This study investigated the survival of human rotavirus (HRV) on fresh beef, chicken, and lettuce stored at various temperatures, as well as the effect of UV-C exposure on HRV viability on these food surfaces. At 20 °C, the survival rate of three HRV strains (WA, 89-12C2, and DS-1) on beef, chicken, and lettuce decreased within 3 days, with the most significant reduction observed on beef. When stored at 4 °C, a significant reduction in HRV viability was observed by day 7, with the greatest decrease observed on beef, followed by chicken and lettuce.

Biofilm formation on biological and material surfaces represents a heavy health and economic burden for both patient and society. To contrast this phenomenon, medical devices combining antibacterial and pro-wound healing abilities are a promising strategy. In the present work, Xanthan gum/Guar gum (XG/GG)-based scaffolds were tuned with thymol and Zn to obtain wound dressings that combine antibacterial and antibiofilm properties and favour the healing process.
