Background: Cardiometabolic diseases, such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia or obesity, constitute major causes of mortality and morbidity worldwide, especially among middle-aged individuals. The increasing incidence and association with aging and lifestyle, render the cardiometabolic diseases a societal concern. This is further reinforced by their association with an increased risk of cognitive impairment and neurodegenerative diseases (namely dementia and Alzheimer's disease (AD)).

Objective: Microvascular changes, such as crossing nailfold capillaries, could be crucial for linking maximum lifetime body mass index (BMI) and microvascular complications in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). However, the relationship between maximum lifetime BMI and microvascular changes remains elusive. This study aimed to elucidate the relationship between maximum lifetime BMI and the percentage of crossing nailfold capillaries among patients with T2DM.

Background: Several matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) have been reported to be associated with intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD) in several previous studies. However, the causal relationship between MMPs and IDD remains unclear. In this study, Mendelian randomization (MR) was used to analyze the causal relationship between the plasma levels of multiple MMPs and the risk of IDD.
