AI Article Synopsis

  • Follicular unit hair transplantation has improved eyebrow restoration outcomes, but many patients still experience unnatural results post-surgery.
  • This study analyzes 100 dissatisfied patients from 2011 to 2021, identifying issues like sparse eyebrows and inconsistent hair density as common problems.
  • Key factors affecting outcomes include low hair survival rates, misunderstandings about natural eyebrow aesthetics, and insufficient patient communication.

Article Abstract

Background: Follicular unit hair transplantation has greatly elevated the results of eyebrow restoration. However, unnatural and unbeautiful-looking results are still often seen after the surgery.

Objectives: This study focused on poor eyebrow transplantation, discussed its possible reasons, and offered refined proposals.

Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed on 100 patients who were dissatisfied with the results of eyebrow grafting and came to our department from 2011 to 2021. Demographic characteristics, primary disease, and clinical data were objectively summarized and analyzed for these patients.

Results: The patients' medical charts and photographs were analyzed and summarized into the following outcomes: Thirty-six patients (36%) had sparse eyebrows. Forty-one patients (41%) had eyebrows with inhomogeneous density and disordered growth direction. Eleven patients (11%) did not have single-hair grafting. Seven reconstructed eyebrows (7%) had a poor connection with the remaining eyebrows. Five new eyebrows (5%) had inconsistent hair characteristics with the original eyebrows. Lower hair survival rates, insufficient understanding of naturally beautiful eyebrows, and inadequate communication with patients were the main reasons for poor outcomes.

Conclusions: Good reconstructed eyebrows should have a high hair survival rate, and hair growth direction and characteristics should also be consistent with the natural eyebrow to achieve ideal surgical effects.

Background: Frontal fibrosing alopecia (FFA) is a scarring hair loss condition primarily affecting the frontotemporal hairline and often leading to partial or complete loss of eyebrows in a significant number of cases. It is characterized by slow progression and typically shows poor response to available treatments. Diagnosis relies on clinical, trichoscopic, and histopathological assessments, with specific criteria proposed by Vañó-Galván et al.

Article Synopsis
  • The study compares a new levator dissection-resection (LDR) surgical technique to two standard frontalis-based procedures for treating congenital ptosis with poor levator function in thirty patients.
  • All three surgical groups showed significant improvement in eyelid elevation (measured by MRD-1) after six months, with the LDR group also benefiting from improved levator function and symmetry during eye movement.
  • Overall, the LDR technique provided similar eyelid elevation to the frontalis methods while offering better results in levator function and symmetry, with no increased risk to the patients' corneas.
