In this work, we explored the impact of zwitterionic surfactants, sulfobetaine 16 (SB-16) and a PEG-phospholipid conjugate (DSPE-PEG), on nanosensor performance. We fabricated four sensors (for Na, K, Al, and O) and examined how these surfactants influenced various aspects, including fabrication methods, sensing mechanisms, and the incorporation of nanomaterials. Our results highlighted SB-16's role in enhancing selectivity in ion-exchange sensors (Na and K) while maintaining sensitivity akin to its PEG counterpart. The liquid-liquid extraction based sensors (Al) were unaffected by surfactant choice, while the O sensors that operate collisional quenching exhibited reduced sensitivity with SB-16 when compared to its PEG-based counterpart. Additionally, the SB-16 sensors proved adaptable to different fabrication approaches (SESE - single emulsion solvent evaporation and FNP - flash nanoprecipitation), showcased good cell viability and maintained a functional lifetime of at least five days. Furthermore, the use of quantum dots, we showed that it is possible to incorporate other nanomaterials into the sensing phase of SB-16 sensors. Future investigations could target enhancing the pH stability of zwitterionic surfactants to further advance their applicability in sensor technologies.

Recent advancements in polymer materials have enabled the synthesis of bio-based monomers from renewable resources, promoting sustainable alternatives to fossil-based materials. This study presents a novel zwitterionic surfactant, SF, derived from 10-undecenoic acid obtained from castor oil through a four-step reaction, achieving a yield of 78%. SF has a critical micelle concentration (CMC) of 1235 mg/L, slightly higher than the commercial anionic surfactant Rhodacal DS-4 (sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate), and effectively stabilizes monomer droplets, leading to excellent conversion and stable latex formation.

We have investigated the effect of length and chemical structure of phospholipid tails on the spontaneous formation of unilamellar liposomal vesicles in binary solute mixtures of cationic drug surfactant and zwitterionic phosphatidylcholine phospholipids. Binary drug surfactant-phospholipid mixtures with four different phospholipids with identical headgroups (two saturated phospholipids 1,2-dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DMPC, 14:0) and 1,2-Dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DPPC, 16:0), and two unsaturated lipids 1,2-dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DOPC, 18:1) and 1,2-Dierucoyl-sn-Glycero-3-Phosphatidylcholine (DEPC, 22:1)) combined with two different tricyclic antidepressant drugs (amitriptyline hydrochloride (AMT) and doxepin hydrochloride (DXP)) have been investigated with small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) and cryo-transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM). We observe a conspicuous impact of phospholipid tail structure on both micelle-to-vesicle transition point and vesicle size.

The Role of Nonequilibrium Solvent Effects in Enhancing Direct CO Capture at the Air-Aqueous Amino Acid Interface.

Direct air capture (DAC) technologies are limited by the poor understanding of the dynamic role of interfaces in modulating the chemisorption of CO from air into solutions. While the reactivity of aqueous amine-based solvents in the bulk environment is strongly inhibited by nonequilibrium solvent effects, promoting DAC at interfaces posits a possibility to reduce the coupling with the solvent and significantly accelerate DAC. Building on an experimentally proven concept to bring an anionic glycine absorbent to the interface through ion-pairing interactions with a positively charged surfactant, we establish the fundamental time scales for key elementary steps involved in DAC with rate theory and enhanced-sampling molecular dynamics simulations.

Silicone coatings are widely employed in marine antifouling applications due to their low surface energy. However, in static marine environments, pure silicone coatings are ineffective in preventing the adhesion of marine biofilms, which consist of proteins, marine bacteria, and extracellular matrices, ultimately promoting the attachment of macrofouling organisms. Coumarins are a class of compounds known for their synthetic and structural versatility, as well as their properties of great interest, such as biological and photophysical activities, and their application in the analysis of molecular microenvironments and their characteristics, such as pH. In this work, the synthesis of 7-hydroxy-6-methoxy-2-oxo-2H-chromene-3-carboxylic acid (3-SCA) was reported, and its absorption, emission and excitation spectral properties, along with photophysical properties such as molar absorption coefficient, lifetime, and Stokes Shift (Δν) in different solvents and pHs, were evaluated for the first time. High values of fluorescence quantum yield were observed for 3-SCA in solvents of different polarities, with a lifetime of approximately 5 ns.
