The genetic basis of complex traits involves the function of many genes with small effects as well as complex gene-gene and gene-environment interactions. As one of the major players in complex diseases, the role of gene-environment interactions has been increasingly recognized. Motivated by epidemiology studies to evaluate the joint effect of environmental mixtures, we developed a functional varying-index coefficient model (FVICM) to assess the combined effect of environmental mixtures and their interactions with genes, under a longitudinal design with quantitative traits.

Previous studies have shown that high-gamma (HG) activity in the primary visual cortex (V1) has distinct higher (broadband) and lower (narrowband) components with different functions and origins. However, it is unclear whether a similar segregation exists in the primary somatosensory cortex (S1), and the origins and roles of HG activity in S1 remain unknown. Here, we investigate the functional roles and origins of HG activity in S1 during tactile stimulation in humans and a rat model.

Tau exhibits change in both spatial extent and density of pathology along the Alzheimer's disease (AD) spectrum with each aspect contributing to the overall burden of pathological tau. Nevertheless, studies using Tau PET have measured either magnitude using standardized uptake value ratios (SUVRs) or extent using number of Tau+ regions. We hypothesized that combining these two dimensions into a single measure of Magnitude and eXtent, Tau-MaX, would provide improved quantification of global tau burden as well as allowing for a region-agnostic measure of global tau burden that does not require a pre-specified region of interest (ROI) or meta-ROI.

Changes in flavor profile of sauce-flavor baijiu: Perceptual interactions between 1-propanol and aroma compounds.

Food Chem X

January 2025

School of Biotechnology and Key Laboratory of Industrial Biotechnology of Ministry of Education, Jiangnan University, Wuxi 214122, PR China.

1-Propanol is an important aroma compound in sauce-flavor Baijiu. However, the mechanism by which it affects the aroma of sauce-flavor Baijiu has not been fully investigated. In this study, an instrumental and perceptual analysis was employed to assess the impact of 1-propanol on the flavor and volatile compounds in sauce-flavor Baijiu.

Recycling of Post-Consumer Waste Polystyrene Using Commercial Plastic Additives.

ACS Cent Sci

Department of Chemistry, Princeton University, Princeton, New Jersey 08544, United States.

Photothermal conversion can promote plastic depolymerization (chemical recycling to a monomer) through light-to-heat conversion. The highly localized temperature gradient near the photothermal agent surface allows selective heating with spatial control not observed with bulk pyrolysis. However, identifying and incorporating practical photothermal agents into plastics for end-of-life depolymerization have not been realized.
