Purpose: To compare the postoperative pain score, opioid consumption, and blood loss in knee osteoarthritis patients who underwent unilateral primary total knee arthroplasty with and without intraoperative cold solution irrigation.

Method: In total, 70 knee osteoarthritis patients were randomly included in the study and allocated into 2 groups. The first group was irrigated intraoperatively with a cold solution and the second group was irrigated intraoperatively with a room-temperature solution.

Results: The cold solution group showed significantly lower pain scores (numerical rating scale, NRS) at 28 h postoperatively (p = 0.047). There were no significant differences in opioid consumption or blood loss between the groups.

Conclusions: Intraoperative cold solution irrigation in unilateral primary total knee arthroplasty patients may provide the benefit of early postoperative pain reduction for up to 28 h but has no effect in terms of reducing opioid consumption or blood loss.

Trial Registration: The trial was registered in the Thai Clinical Trials Registry (TCTR) Trial registration number ID: TCTR20200706001 on 06/07/2020.

Adaptive Phase Change Microcapsules for Efficient Sustainable Cooling.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

January 2025

School of Artificial Intelligence Science and Technology, University of Shanghai for Science and Technology, Shanghai 200093, China.

Passive radiative cooling has recently gained significant attention as a highly promising technology that offers a zero-energy and electricity-free solution to tackle the pressing issue of global warming. Nevertheless, research efforts have predominantly focused on enhancing daytime and hot-day radiative cooling efficacy, often neglecting the potential downsides associated with excessive cooling and the consequent increased heating expenses during cold nights and winter days. Herein, we demonstrate a micro-nanostructured engineered composite film that synergistically integrates room-temperature adaptive silica-shell/oil-core phase change microcapsules (S-PCMs) with commercially available cellulose fibers.

Introduction: Graft optimization is a necessity in order to develop uterus transplantation from brain-dead donors, as a complement to living donors, as these grafts are rare and the last organs retrieved in multiple organ donation. The aim of this study was to assess the feasibility and interest of hypothermic machine perfusion (HMP) in uterus transplantation using a porcine model; secondary outcomes were the evaluation of the graft's tolerance to a prolonged cold ischaemia time and to find new biomarkers of uterus viability.

Material And Methods: Fifteen uterus allotransplantations were performed in a porcine model, after 18 h of cold ischaemia, divided in three groups: Static cold storage in a HTK solution, HMP (with the VitaSmart (™) machine Bridge to Life Ltd.

Passive Radiant Cooling and Heating are green and sustainable methods of radiant heat management without consuming additional energy. However, the absorption of sunlight and poor insulation of materials can reduce radiative cooling and also affect radiative heating performance. Herein, we have constructed porous hierarchical dual-mode silk nanofibrous aerogel (SNF) films with high mechanical toughness and stability using silk nanofibers/GO.

Underwater acoustic transducers need to expand the coverage of acoustic signals as much as possible in most ocean explorations, and the directivity indicators of transducers are difficult to change after the device is packaged, which makes the emergence angle of the underwater acoustic transducer limited in special operating environments, such as polar regions, submarine volcanoes, and cold springs. Taking advantage of the refractive characteristics of sound waves propagating in different media, the directivity indicators can be controlled by installing an acoustic lens outside the underwater acoustic transducer. To increase the detection range of an underwater acoustic transducer in a specific marine environment, a curvature-determining method for the diverging acoustic lens of an underwater acoustic transducer is proposed based on the acoustic ray tracing theory.

Effect of Gradient Transition Layer on the Cracking Behavior of Ni60B (NiCrBSi) Coatings by Laser Cladding.

Materials (Basel)

State Key Laboratory of High-Performance Precision Manufacturing, Dalian University of Technology, Dalian 116024, China.

Laser cladding technology is an effective method for producing wear-resistant coatings on damaged substrates, improving both wear and corrosion resistance, which extends the service life of components. However, the fabrication of hard and brittle materials is highly susceptible to the problem of cracking. Using gradient transition layers is an effective strategy to mitigate the challenge of achieving crack-free laser-melted wear-resistant coatings.
