This review summarizes the diagnosis and management of thyrotoxicosis in pregnancy. The diagnostic clinical and biochemical considerations used to distinguish the various etiologies of hyperthyroidism from appropriate physiologic changes during pregnancy will be outlined. Finally, the review will discuss the risks and benefits of available options for the treatment of thyrotoxicosis during pregnancy, to mitigate the risks of fetal hyperthyroidism.

Maternal Graves' disease (GD) poses a significant risk to neonatal thyroid function due to the transplacental transfer of thyrotropin receptor antibodies (TRAbs). This systematic review aims to assess the impact of maternal GD on neonatal thyroid outcomes and identify key maternal factors influencing these outcomes. A comprehensive literature search was conducted across PubMed, Scopus, and Cochrane, resulting in the inclusion of 18 studies published from 2014 to 2024.

Objective: The objective of this study was to examine whether obesity without preexisting or gestational comorbidities is associated with postpartum hospital use (PHU).
Methods: We studied 2016 to 2018 birth certificate and discharge data on 178,729 New York City births without International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10) codes at delivery for diabetes; hypertension; placental disease; anemia; thyrotoxicosis; bariatric surgery; and pulmonary, cardiac, renal, bleeding, autoimmune, digestive, neuromuscular, mental, or substance-use disorders. We defined PHU as ≥1 readmission or emergency department visit within 30 days of delivery discharge.

Thyrotropin receptor antibodies (TRAb) are specific for Graves' disease (GD) and play a crucial role in the pathogenesis of GD. TRAb assays have recently been greatly improved. This review discusses the clinical application of TRAb in the differential diagnosis of hyperthyroidism, the prognosis of GD, GD in gestation and pediatrics, and GD related ophthalmopathy (GO).

Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) has structural similarities with thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and may stimulate TSH receptors at higher concentrations. During pregnancy, placental hCG causes TSH suppression, contributing to hyperemesis. However, in males, clinical manifestations caused by excess hCG are rare.
