Treated drinking water is delivered to customers through drinking water distribution systems (DWDSs). Although studies have focused on exploring the microbial ecology of DWDSs, knowledge about the effects of different water treatments on the bacterial community of biofilm and loose deposits in DWDS is limited. This study assessed the effects of additional treatments on the bacterial communities developed in 10 months' old pilot DWDSs. The results showed a similar bacterial community in the pipe-wall biofilm, which was dominated by Novosphingobium spp. (20-82 %) and Sphingomonas spp. (11-53 %), regardless of the treatment applied. The bacterial communities that were retained in the distribution systems (including pipe-wall biofilm and loose deposits) were similar to the particle-associated bacteria (PAB) in the corresponding supply water. The additional treatments showed clear effects of the removal and/or introduction of particles. The genera Aeromonas spp., Clostridium spp., Legionella spp., and Pseudomonas spp., which contain opportunistic pathogenic species, were only detected among the PAB in ion exchange system. Our study demonstrated that the biofilm community is consistent across treatments, and the contribution from bacteria in loose deposits is important but can be controlled by removing particles. These findings offer more insight into the origin and development of microbial ecology in DWDSs and suggest paths for further research on the possibility of managing the microbial ecology in distribution systems.

Members of the genus are commonly found in natural aquatic ecosystems. However, they are also frequently present in non-chlorinated drinking water distribution systems. High densities of these bacteria indicate favorable conditions for microbial regrowth, which is considered undesirable.

Shell beds, or coquinas, have a complex origin, limiting their utility in paleoecology. However, such accumulations can serve as crucial paleoenvironmental indicators, since their bioestratinomic and diagenetic properties explain the physical-chemical and biological processes of their formation, as well as the ancient environments linked to their development. In 2016, the PALEOANTAR Project sampled coquinas from the James Ross Island (Antarctic Peninsula) in Passo São José (PSJ - San José Way) and Muro do Castelo (MDC - Castle Wall), two new localities with outcrops of the lower Lachman Crags Member, Santa Marta Formation, Marambio Group, Cretaceous of Larsen Basin.

Metallic lithium deposition processes in NCM811∥graphite full cells during extreme-fast charging of 4 C (fully charged within 15 min) are detected via electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and EPR imaging over hundreds of cycles to quantify lithium deposits and visualize their spatial distribution. EPR imaging shows that constant-voltage charge generates loose Li dendrites with divergent growth whereas overcharge leads to long dendrites with vertical growth, and these Li deposits accumulate at the anode edges, which could deplete the Li resource at the cathode edges. Moreover, quantitative EPR indicates that the stripping current correlates to the deposit surface areas, while the reintercalation current depends on the contact areas between plated Li and graphite.

Tissue engineering employs the use of bioactive materials to facilitate the filling and acceleration of bone defect healing, thereby introducing novel concepts to the field of in situ bone repair. Some studies have shown that periosteum plays an important role in bone regeneration and repair. In this study, biomimetic periosteum-bone scaffolds were prepared by depositing poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) electrospun fibers on the surface of the gelatin/chitosan cryogel to mimic the bone and periosteum structure, respectively.

The unstable lithium (Li)/electrolyte interface, causing inferior cycling efficiency and unrestrained dendrite growth, has severely hampered the practical deployment of Li metal batteries (LMBs), particularly in carbonate electrolytes. Herein, we present a robust approach capitalizing on a dynamic supramolecular elastomer (DSE) interface layer, which is capable of being reduced with Li metal to spontaneously form strong Li ion-dipole interaction, thereby enhancing interfacial stability in carbonate electrolytes. The soft phase in the DSE structure enables fast Li transport via loosely coordinated Li-O interaction, while the hard phase, rich in electronegative lithiophilic sites, drives the generation of fast-ion-conducting solid electrolyte interface components, including LiN and LiS.
