Heart Failure: Is There an Ideal Biomarker?

Rev Cardiovasc Med

Published: November 2023

An always-rising prevalence of heart failure (HF), formerly classified as an emerging epidemic in 1997 and still representing a serious problem of public health, imposes on us to examine more in-depth the pathophysiological mechanisms it is based on. Over the last few years, several biomarkers have been chosen and used in the management of patients affected by HF. The research about biomarkers has broadened our knowledge by identifying some underlying pathophysiological mechanisms occurring in patients with both acute and chronic HF. This review aims to provide an overview of the role of biomarkers previously identified as responsible for the pathophysiological mechanisms subtending the disease and other emerging ones to conduct the treatment and identify possible prognostic implications that may allow the optimization of the therapy and/or influence a closer follow-up. Taking the high prevalence of HF-associated comorbidities into account, an integrated approach using various biomarkers has shown promising results in predicting mortality, a preferable risk stratification, and the decrease of rehospitalizations, reducing health care costs as well.

This consensus on primary hyperparathyroidism, drawn up under the aegises of the French Society of Endocrinology (SFE), French Association of Endocrine Surgery (AFCE) and French Society of Nuclear Medicine (SFMN), provides an update on positive, etiological and differential diagnosis and treatment in primary hyperparathyroidism. These recommendations take account of recent increase in the prevalence of primary hyperparathyroidism, due to 1. more systematic routine measurement of blood calcium and improved quality of parathyroid hormone assays, 2.

E3 ubiquitin ligase SYVN1 as a promising therapeutic target for diverse human diseases.

Pharmacol Res

January 2025

State Key Laboratory of Frigid Zone Cardiovascular Disease, Department of Cardiovascular Surgery, General Hospital of Northern Theater Command, Shenyang 110016, Liaoning, China. Electronic address:

Numerous studies conducted in recent years indicate that mammalian E3 ubiquitin ligases serve as key regulators in the maintenance of cellular homeostasis by targeting the ubiquitination of substrate proteins and activating downstream signaling pathways. SYVN1, an E3 ubiquitin ligase, is characterized by its significant functions in regulating various biological processes, including molecular mechanisms related to gene expression, signaling pathways, and cell death, among others. Consequently, SYVN1 plays a crucial role in both normal human physiology and the pathogenesis of various diseases, such as oncogenesis, cardiovascular disorders, immune regulation, skeletal anomalies, and neurological diseases.

Assessing platelet-derived extracellular vesicles for potential as therapeutic targets in cardiovascular diseases.

Expert Opin Ther Targets

January 2025

Department of Biochemistry, Cardiovascular Research Institute Maastricht, Maastricht University, Maastricht, the Netherlands.

Introduction: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death worldwide. Platelet-derived extracellular vesicles (PEV) have attracted extensive attention in cardiovascular disease research in recent years because their cargo is involved in a variety of pathophysiological processes, such as thrombosis, immune response, promotion or inhibition of inflammatory response, promotion of angiogenesis as well as cell proliferation and migration.

Areas Covered: This review explores the role of PEV in various cardiovascular diseases (such as atherosclerosis, myocardial infarction, ischemia-reperfusion injury, and heart failure), with relation to its molecular cargo (nucleic acids, bioactive lipids, proteins) and aims to provide new insights in the pathophysiologic role of PEV, and methods for preventing and treating cardiovascular diseases based on PEV.

Influence of gut bacteria on type 2 diabetes: Mechanisms and therapeutic strategy.

World J Diabetes

January 2025

College of Materials and Chemical Engineering, Southwest Forestry University, Kunming 650224, Yunnan Province, China.

The onset and progression of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are strongly associated with imbalances in gut bacteria, making the gut microbiome a new potential therapeutic focus. This commentary examines the recent publication in . The article explores the association between T2DM and gut microbiota, with a focus on the pathophysiological changes related to dysbiosis.

Background:  Systemic inflammation, metabolic dysregulation, and changes in biochemical markers are closely associated with the progression of lung cancer. This study focuses on evaluating serum parathyroid hormone (PTH), C-reactive protein (CRP), lipid profile parameters, and interleukin-6 (IL-6) in relation to the stages of lung cancer, exploring their potential as biomarkers for assessing disease severity.

Methods: A total of 160 lung cancer patients were selected for a cross-sectional study and equally distributed into four clinical stages (Stages 1-4).
